Yeah, same problem here for days on end. Hopefully this gets fixed ASAP. I'd rather be able to file with turbotax since I already paid the fees.
Also having similar issue. Using the online TurboTax premier. Has anyone had any success using the desktop version or also having issues with desktop version?
Kat, I appreciate you looking into this but should we seek alternatives to turbotax? I don't want to have to file an extension especially when there is no new information.
@brianisselbacher SURELY TurboTax would have this resolved before you'd need to file for an extension. That said, I couldn't blame you at all if you decided to use another tax prep company. That's really your call. I've left messages almost daily encouraging more attention to this one issue. You're among many users experiencing the same problem.
As I said in an earlier post, one user reported that they've been able to e-file. You may want to try clearing your cache and deleting cookies (of course after first signing out of your TT account), and trying to e-file again. Maybe even try a different browser. Here are instructions for clearing the cache:
Kat, I've tried that a month ago. Like the other users in this thread have described, using multiple devices, browsers etc. Over 2 weeks ago I heard that there was a known issue and that the fix was only a couple of days away. It's now been 10 days.... and nothing. It's not ONLY the E-FILE that doesn't work but if I wanted to mail the forms, I CAN'T print them! That's where I think the hang up is.... BTW I have about 5,000 transactions for my investments..... I originally thought that it was the cause of my issue. But, then I deleted one financial exchange that had 2700 transactions and just did one purchase/sale (would have to mail 8949 form separately) and that still didn't work. I've talked to CPA's & Customer service and just get the run around.
@brianisselbacher HOW FRUSTRATING! I'm going to share you post with Moderators once again. I can't imagine why this hasn't been escalated to the top of the line.
try to summarize more to less than 2000, then 1000. I think TTO can only handle less than 1000 transactions.
Here is how I fixed mine. (Believe mine is because of too many transactions with crypto/stocks)
Bought Desktop version of TurboTax Premier ( You might need different version depending on your taxes)
Imported all my tax stuff over.
Desktop version does not import crypto from coinbase or robinhood or a csv file.
Has to import as txf file.
Downloaded CSV file from Coinbase
had to adjust headers of csv file to match website below. Had to cut and past rows. They have to be in a certain order.
went to www.easytxf.com/
converted and downloaded my file.
imported in.
Now I was able to file. I ended up with 8 pages of transactions on form 8949 for crypto.
Hope this helps someone.
I spent 2.5 hrs with billing for a refund on the online version. If you call. Go ahead tell your story but ask for supervisor because all the phone bill person can do is send email link for refund which will get denied because online version does not qualify for refund due to not charging until ready to file. However since I cant print or e-file supervisor gave a refund after seeing my confirmation code of desktop version.
I was able to finally file my return. It is related to crypto transactions. I had too many for turbo tax to process, so I had to buy the desktop version and manually enter my gross proceeds and cost basis for the total sales instead of all 5,000 sales due to the entities I purchased my crypto through not sending a 1099-B this year. It is tedious and takes a long time to calculate, but you have to go into your exchanges and download a .csv file and convert it through cointracker and then upload it to turbo tax online. That gives you your cost basis and gross proceeds/gain loss. Then go into the desktop version and enter those numbers. Once I did that, my return was transmitted and I am waiting on approval.
I did hear from the Moderators today that the issue has been resolved. But judging from the posts in this thread, it appears that you guys have figured out a workaround. It seems that the issue has to do with crypto transactions, and that the Desktop (CD/Download) platform is the way to accomplish e-filing.
To users that have figured out the workaround, THANK YOU! You're doing the hard work!
Hi Kat, I appreciate you taking the time to look into this however I just tried to e-file again and was unsuccessful. It to upgrade to the desktop version is about $300 is my understanding which I’ve already paid 300 to get to where I am now. Doesn’t seem to make sense. As far as deleting all the transactions associated with the cryptocurrency and then putting in a line item I can try that but then it would require me mailing a 8949 form to the irs… kinda defeats the point of turbo tax. Is there anyway to reopen the ticket with the escalation team? I can’t be the only one who doesn’t have anymore time to work through this issue?
@brianisselbacher I use Desktop platform exclusively, and have for years. I didn't have THAT many crypto transactions, but I entered them manually. The program automatically generated Form 8949. In the old days (before import was available), this is how all stock transactions were entered. I realize that you may have MANY more transactions than I did. I know very little about CSV files, etc. I'm in the learning mode.
But a couple of users in this thread have, I think, shared their workarounds pretty well. Maybe that will help?
As for switching from Online to Desktop, you definitely won't have to pay again! $300 is pretty high for what you've already paid! Let me see how I may be able to help you if you wish to make the switch to Desktop. Let me know here in this thread. We'll figure this out.
Just want to confirm that it's still not working for me to print/save, but I tested deleting all my crypto transactions temporarily and it worked right away. Thanks to the other users who mentioned this. Unfortunately the workarounds people mentioned will not work for me or would require a lot of manual work. I had imported my crypto from tax.crypto.com via a csv file, and I have already spent many hours getting all the stuff correct at tax.crypto.com, so I'm quite unhappy about this bug. The lack of transparency from TurboTax about the exact nature of the bug(s) and if they will be resolved or not is frustrating and a very poor customer experience.
3/10 Tried to save my return today using PRINT CENTER in order to check forms in detail. Don't even get the message above. A little circle whirls for a few seconds and nothing happens. This worked on 3/4, FYI
I ended up having to print a 450 page Form 8949 and mail to the IRS. You will have to summarize your cost basis and proceeds for it to process and then mail your Form 8949 with a detailed list of each transaction. I think TurboTax is equipped to only handle so many stock/crypto transactions.
