I filed a 1040 and did not check box for "Is a dependent" (I am). My SSN was flagged as being on another return as a dependent, and my e-file 1040 was rejected. Instructions were to create an amended return and refile. Return was amended (became a 1040X) but when I tried to e-file the software error message said you cannot e-file a 1040X if you didn't efile the original 1040. The saved documents from Turbotax provide date/time stamps showing a return was efiled and rejected.
Since I couldn't efile, I mailed the 1040X to IRS. I have received a note from IRS rejecting my 1040X because they have no record of receiving my original 1040.
Question: Should I just delete the original 1040 file and start again, pretend I didn't already efile?

No you do not amend. You just fix your return and resend it. No problem.
You should NOT use Amend to fix a rejected return. You should Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.
If you clicked on the amend button to fix it you might need to undo that first. How to delete an Amended return in the Online version
Then to fix it go to My Info and look for the checkbox that says you are a dependent.

NO. You do not amend your return for that problem. You only use the "amend" process for a tax return that has been filed, accepted and processed by the IRS---when you need to correct or add information to the return they already processed.
So get out of "amend":
I clicked on “amend” by mistake

You misunderstood. You were supposed to just go back into your original tax return and fix your mistake in My Info BEFORE you tried to e-file it again. You should not have clicked on "amend." You have to go to MY INFO and correct the way you answered the question about whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.
Not sure at this point if you will be able to e-file the return. Tomorrow, October 16 is the last day to e-file an original 2022 tax return. See if you can fix your mistake. If you can, then try to e-file the return. If it will not let you e-file, then you are going to have to print, sign and mail the return that shows that you can be claimed as a dependent.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
