To add, change or delete a current year federal tax refund to next year's taxes before you file your tax return -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Under Additional Tax Payments
  • On Apply Refund to Next Year, click on the start or update button

Or enter apply federal refund to next year in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to apply federal refund to next year

The amount applied to next years taxes will be shown on Form 1040 Line 36

This is a bad answer.  It says to search for a phrase once you are "inside the return" whatever that means.  But, it doesn't say how to do a search.  I didn't see anyway to search inside the return.  It could have just said go to "other tax situations" and there is a place to click on applying your refund.

@iva1  I am posting a screenshot for you below on how to search "apply federal refund to next year" and then select the Jump to link in the search results. You will need to pay your TurboTax fees before you can choose your refund method also. The refund method is under the "File" section after you do your "Review" so that has to be completed first. Then you should see an option to jump that is in the second screenshot, which is just a example of what you will see to take you to the correct section (the blue box).

Please see the TurboTax FAQ below for additional instructions:

How do I apply my refund to next year's (2021) taxes?

T

These are also the basic directions to get to your refund method selection:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax.
  2. Go to the File section in the left menu.
  3. Next to Step 2: Your refund info select Revisit.
  4. Choose your desired refund method and select Continue.

It would be nice to have the feature of applying an amount to next year's taxes by percentage.
For instance, as I continue to edit my own data, the calculated federal refund could change, but the value entered is not changing.  It would be handy to have EITHER a PERCENTAGE (100%) or an amount, in this selection box.

You can choose to apply a portion of your 2020 refund to the next year's tax bill.  You just need to enter an amount instead of percentage.

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • From the top, select Other Tax Situations
  • Under" Additional Tax Payments" / Apply Refund to Next Year, select Revisit
  • Next screen, "Apply How Much?", enter the amount.  See image

How can I apply Federal refund to next year's estimated taxes?  I am filing 2021 Federal return under  disaster relief for Florida hurricanes in 2022.

When you transfer last year's return over, we'll also transfer any refunds you applied from your 2021 return. You'll see this credit in your refund meter when you start your 2022 return.

Use this link for steps to accomplish this and additional information.
