How do I apply my refund to next year's (2020) taxes?

You can apply some or all of your 2019 tax refund to next year's taxes. When you come back to do your taxes in 2021, the amount you applied will show up as a credit.

Tip: If you pay quarterly estimated taxes, apply a portion your refund to next year's first-quarter estimated tax payment, which is now due July 15. This can help prevent underpayment penalties on next year's return.

  1. Open (continue) your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside your return, search for this exact phrase: apply federal refund to next year and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Follow the instructions on the Apply Refund to 2020 Taxes screen.

  1. Open (continue) your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. Tap the menu icon on the upper-left side of the screen.
  3. Under the Federal Taxes option tap Other Tax Situations.
  4. Then, tap on Additional Tax Payments, and Apply Refund to Next Year.
  5. Select the first option (apply all or part of it) when asked how you want us to handle your 2019 refund and swipe right to continue.
  6. Enter the amount you want to apply and proceed.
