Accidentally claiming recovery rebate

@Ladyhu Not sure what "specialist" prepared your return.   But if you were unsure whether you received the 3rd stimulus you had ways to check.  You could have checked your own bank account for deposits of $1400 per person on your tax return after mid-March of 2021, or you could have checked your online account with the IRS to see if the IRS showed that the $1400 per person 3rd stimulus was sent to you.   People who received the 3rd stimulus should have received letter 6475 from the IRS as another reminder to use that information when preparing your 2021 tax return.

If you did in fact receive that $1400 per person then saying no to the question about it put it on line 30 of your tax return, artificially inflating your refund.   You cannot get the 3rd stimulus twice.  The IRS cross checks line 30 and if you already received the 3rd EIP they recalculate your refund or tax due.

Sorry---if you made a mistake and owe additional tax to the IRS you have to pay it.

Try checking your online account with the IRS

Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 stimulus or EIP check in 2021?   Did you receive it?   When you were asked on your tax return did you say no?   Was there $1400 on line 30 of your tax return?

If the IRS says you got $1400 last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.

If you need to trace a payment that the IRS says has been issued to you, mail or fax a completed IRS Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

In my professional practice ... we adopted the $1 rule  for the unknown stimulus amount.  If the client could not remember or figure out if they got the stimulus advance then we entered  in the program that they got all of it EXCEPT $1  which put a $1 credit on line 30 which forced the IRS to reconcile the credit.   If they did get the advance then the refund would be $1 less or they would owe $1 more.   If they did not get all or any of the advance then the refund would be pleasantly higher or they would owe less.  This way it was good news in either direction and I was a "hero" and not the bearer of bad news.

@Ladyhu - what do you do?

there is no need to amend; the IRS has taken care of that

check your bank account from March - May, 2021 and confirm you actually received hte stimulus

if yes, then just pay the amount due and you are done!

I think I need to go back to the location where filed my taxes and asked an experienced  to review my tax,  alot of mistakes are still there, low income and expecting $600, now I owe $1900!!!!

Accidentally claiming recovery rebate

@Ladyhu   How much is on your 1040 line 30?  If you already got the 1400 it should NOT be on line 30.  Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.  If it's on line 30 you tried to get it again so the IRS took it off and sent you a bill.

But that does not account for the total difference.  Do you have any children?  Check line 28.  You may have tried to claim the full Child Tax Credit but you already got some Advance Child Tax Credit.

Accidentally claiming recovery rebate

What if I owed the IRS money and am not expecting a refund and still accidentally claimed the rebate on my taxes. I received a letter saying I owe the IRS the $1400 rebate. I did receive the rebate. I'd like to think that the IRS is wrong but I have a feeling that I made a mistake and just owe the IRS money? Can anyone confirm?

Accidentally claiming recovery rebate

Yes if you have the 1400 on 1040 line 30 but you already got the 3rd Stimulus payment then yes you owe the 1400 credit you got.  You tried to claim it again.  You can't get it twice.  Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.

if you received the $1400 stimulus last year, then you can't get it again.  If Line 30 shows $1400, then in effect, yuou tried to get it again.

if your tax return showed you owe money, then you owe $1400 more than that.  Line 30 should have been zero (instead of $1400) which would have increased what you owe by the same $1400
