I got the message also for the recovery rebate error but my refund was adjusted all the way down to zero. Is this correct? If so does anyone know if it can be fixed?
Hello, when you first got your notice you go online to where’s my refund? If you did you see your expected amount change to reflect the recovery rebate? My status changed today but now it shows my refund went to zero dollars
LOTS of people have made mistakes this year with the recovery rebate credit by "forgetting" that they received the $1400 per person stimulus checks last year. They answered no to the questions for the recovery recovery rebate credit and put the $1400 per person on line 30 of their returns. But you cannot get it twice, so the IRS removes it when it is there by mistake.
Try checking your online account with the IRS

Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 stimulus or EIP check in 2021? Did you receive it? When you were asked on your tax return did you say no? Was there $1400 on line 30 of your tax return?
If the IRS says you got $1400 last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.
LOST THIRD STIMULUS CHECK

I can't be certain whether your tax return is correct because I can't see your tax return, but the IRS does know how much you received for your third stimulus payment.
The Recovery Rebate Credit is only for those who did not get their third stimulus payment. If you say on your tax return that you did not get the credit, TurboTax will add it for you.
When you file that return, the IRS checks to see if you received your third stimulus payment. If you received the third stimulus payment and you claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, the IRS will disallow your credit and your refund will be reduced by the amount of the credit.
What if Federal took your refund because you thought the 2800.00 for the Simulous money hadn't been paid to you and now you owe money, how do you pay your taxes?

Do I need to amend my return or leave it?
So I received my adjustment from the IRS. The new amount (without the credit) was deposited into my account. Do I need to amend my return so it can have the correct amount or do I just leave it?

Just leave it. There is no need to amend a return after the IRS adjusted the original tax return that was filed.
You can leave it. Do not amend.
No you don’t need to they did it for you technically that’s why you didn’t get the rebate. But how long did it take you to get it after you filed?
I filed In the beginning of February by the 9th. I received my notice around March 9th and it was deposited a few days later. @Aces63020 so it took around a month and half.
Same thing happened to me but I amended my return. I scheduled a date for the $1400 to be taken out of my account. Then a couple weeks later I received a letter saying they fixed the mistake and will be giving me a lesser amount in my refund. I ended up getting the lesser correct amount but they still took the $1400 out of my account. What should I do! Keep in mind they did fixed the return for my correct amount so I never received any extra cash but they still took the $1400!! What should I do?
Yes, I don't remember putting a stimulus on line 30, but it was there $2800.00 when I efiled our return and I printed it. Ok so the IRS redid our taxes and instead of getting back $3288.00, we actually got back $488.00. There reason was we added the last stimulus to our 2022 return. When I tried to tell them I don't remember doing it she said well that's what they saw so they redid it accordingly!!
