Why is the child deduction for my 18 year old high school student whom I support less than if he was 17 years old. Stuff I read doesn't support this.
I changed his DOB (temporarily to see) to make him 1 year younger and my refund was over $1000 more. Why does it matter if he's a dependent whom I fully support while he's still in school

You lost the child tax credit in the year that he turned 17. There are no exceptions to the rule. You can still claim him as a dependent, but you get the $500 credit for other dependents instead of larger child tax credit.
