Question, my mom claimed me for the first time on her taxes this year as a dependent. But I also filed my own taxes. Would I receive a stimulus check or no?

Also I did check the box that I can be claimed as a dependent but I was told because I filed my own taxes too I would get a payment?

The stimulus payment is an advance on a tax credit for the 2020 tax year. If you are a dependent in 2019, but not in 2020, you will not receive a stimulus payment this year, but will receive one when you file your taxes next year. 

If you and your mother amend your 2019 tax returns, you would not get the payment until after the return has processed. The IRS is not currently processing mail-in returns and amended returns are mail-in. Generally, a mail-in amended return takes 6 weeks to process, but at this point, it is impossible to tell how long it would take.

If you have filed your 2019 tax return and did NOT indicate that someone else could claim you as a dependent on your tax return, then you will receive a stimulus payment.  If you did indicate that someone else can claim you as a dependent, then you will NOT receive a stimulus payment.  In this case, your mother will receive the payment if you were 17 or younger on 12-31-2019.

No. If you claimed your mother as your dependent, only you will get a stimulus payment of up to 1,200.

Dependents do not get a stimulus payment and children under 17 claimed on a tax return results in the return getting an additional payment of up to 500.

Because of that, you will not be getting a stimulus check this year.

What is not clear is: what happens if your Mom does not actually claim you and you file an amended return to uncheck the box, on form 1040, that says you can be claimed.  For sure, if you do get it. it will be a long time coming. If and when you get your stimulus, by amending, please post here to give others some idea how long it takes.

But it probably doesn't matter. Because you can get it early next year, if you are not a dependent in 2020.

So what do she get Because I Thought they paying by Social Security numbers So I would think it would be separate RIGHT? Or we both share 1200 it don’t make Sense when I was just reading the latest news an I know kids get 500 but she’s an adult with a separate Social Security number correct I’m lost here. I should be getting 2400 an Y not they SEE.....both of are social Security numbers

A. No. As the tax filer, you get $1200.  If your dependent was a child, under 17, you would get an additional $500 stimulus.  There is no additional stimulus payment for an adult dependent.

Because you mother is a dependent, she would not normally get a stimulus of her own.  But, if she is not a dependent in 2020, she can, in 2021.

Hi my question is .I'm on disability I was claimed in 2018 when I moved in with an aunt ..this year I have own pace  worked. Lil didn't  make much to file but have own address now. My disability form comes too .. will I get stimulus still ..or have to file ..or just et disability take care of it

Hello, for 2018 I was independent but for 2019 I accidentally claimed myself as dependent. I let it go since it didn’t affect my refund. However, with the stimulus check is there still a possibility for me to still receive it since no one has claimed me? If I don’t get it do you think there will be a way to eventually send in the amended tax return and get the check even if it’s months later? Thank you for your time and help!

I got married 6 months ago in October. My mother in law claimed my wife on last years taxes but we filed jointly together this year. I only received $1,200. Shouldn't we of gotten $2,400?
