Get your taxes done using TurboTax

@Phill216

Q. If I file my mother on my taxes in 2019 we both get 1200 so I should have 2400 coming to my Account RIGHT?

A. No. As the tax filer, you get $1200.  If your dependent was a child, under 17, you would get an additional $500 stimulus.  There is no additional stimulus payment for an adult dependent.

Because you mother is a dependent, she would not normally get a stimulus of her own.  But, if she is not a dependent in 2020, she can, in 2021.

"In essence, the stimulus check acts as an advance of a person's 2020 income tax refund. This means when he/she prepares his 2020 income tax return, there will be a line to include the section 6428 credit. The credit on his 2020 return is subtracted by any amount received as a stimulus check in 2020. If the amount he received as a stimulus check is less than the credit he is due, the difference will be included as part of his 2020 refund. If he has been overpaid by receiving the stimulus check, however, he will not be required to return any excess amount".
