Will *ANY* version of TurboTax Deluxe CD do 2020 New York State tax return free or do I need the "with state" version?

Here is the FILE menu where you can start a new return, open a return, Save etc.  You don't have to finish a return before starting another one.  You can save it and start a new one.  Oh, and be sure to update your program a lot.  There are many updates during tax season.  They usually come out on Thursdays.  Go to Online->Check for Updates.  See the name of my file (at the very top) is Single Test.tax2020.

I am familiar with most of what you said as I have been using TurboTax for years, but I never filed more than one state return per year with TT so I didn't know how that would work.   This year we need to file two federal and NY state sets.  And recently I was also confused by the two versions of Deluxe (with state and without).

I understand I can not efile more than 5 Federal returns but can I efile more than 5 State returns and mail the Federal ones in excess of 5?  I am in NY and must efile.  Thanks!

No.  Five e-files is the limit.  A state tax return cannot be e-filed if the federal tax return is not e-filed.

You can print and mail the NY tax return since the software being used does not support e-filing of the state return.

Appreciate the info.  Any thoughts on a reasonable product that will allow me to do 7 efiles, I would hate to have to go back to mailing (I'm just doing my (big) family by the way)?
