my 19 year old was a high school student for the first 5 months of 2020. He received a1099-NEC for about 8400. We claimed him as a dependent. I am working on his taxes and turbotax deluxe is giving him a standard deduction of 1100. So he is having to pay over 700 in taxes. I read that the deduction was his income plus 350 (or was it 250?) or 1100, whichever is higher. So I'm a bit confused. I'm wondering if I went wrong somewhere lol. Please help... and thanks for the help.

If you are a dependent on another person's tax return and you are filing your own tax return, your standard deduction can not exceed the greater of $1,100 or the sum of $350 and your individual earned income. For a self-employed individual, earned income is the net self-employment income less related expenses, not the gross figure.
He must still pay self-employment tax on that net, which represents both the employee and employer's shares of Social Security payroll taxes.
If you can be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer, your standard deduction for 2020 is limited to the greater of: (1) $1,100, or (2) your earned income plus $350 (but the total can't be more than the basic standard deduction for your filing status).
The amount of tax is could be due to the fact that your son's income was reported on Form 1099-NEC. Non-Employee Compensation is reported on Schedule C, and is subject to self-employment tax. Neither the Standard Deduction nor Itemized Deductions apply when calculating self-employment tax. Another possibility is that it is being reported as Other (unearned) income. If it was reported as unearned income, the Kiddie Tax would apply, It is the tax levied on the portion of your child's unearned income that exceeds $2,200.
For unearned income of $8,400
Again thank you so much for the help!
