Why has my return not been processed yet, it has been almost 72 hours and it still is not accepted or rejected by the irs at all. I have never had this issue before.

For TT to disclaim any and all responsibility re transmitting of efiled returns with their so called employee tax experts saying TT has nothing to do with it once the customer transmits an efiled return to TT is just not correct.  The efiled return is being transmitted to TT not directly to the IRS.  Which is what most of us have figured out by now.

See for example https://money.stackexchange.com/questions/93784/when-you-e-file-your-taxes-with-turbotax-does-intuit... which clarifies that a customer transmitting an efiled return through TT does not go directly to the IRS but instead first to the TT electronic processing center who then sends it on to the IRS (supposedly/eventually).  So IMO I suspect some of the cases of transmittal limbo may very well be the result of TT internal processing center based on what we have seen where some customers have gone and filed elsewhere and gotten immediate acceptance/rejection (or within a few hours).

@Orangesummer

There could be a couple of reasons why you might be experiencing a delay:

1. First, the status might be pending for security reasons. This may be a sign that someone is trying to use your identity to file a tax return. This can take up to 72 hours, after which your return will then be forwarded to the IRS, or if applicable, rejected. If rejected, you can then correct the rejection issue and resubmit. Please see this FAQ for reference.

2. Secondly, there could be a delay if your return has various refundable credits, such as the Earned Income Credit, Investment Credit, Energy Credits, or Business Credits. You may need to wait a few more days and check your filing status again. Please see this FAQ for additional information.

Note: Both instances may be applicable. That is, you could have a hold for security reasons first. And additionally for verification of the refundable credits in your return. In this case, delays might extend beyond 72 hours.

Additionally, if you have Form 5695 and claiming joint occupancy, the IRS will not be accepting these returns until 3/16/25. You can see this on this IRS site. The language you see below is from Row 39 of the Tax Year 2024 spreadsheet.

Taxpayers claiming Joint Occupancy on Form 5695 will have to file via paper if filing their return before the Form 5695 schema is updated in mid-March. This temporary limitation should only impact a subsection of Form 5695 filers.  For a preview of the TY24 draft form and instructions for Form 5695, please see the Draft tax forms on IRS.gov at https://www.irs.gov/draft-tax-forms. Submission of Forms 5695 that do not claim Joint Occupancy may be e-filed at the start of Processing Year 2025

Please, just stop stonewalling everyone.  Customers are not stupid and it is insulting.

As indicated, none of these situations apply to me.

Just making me feel even more comfortable with my decision to go elsewhere next year.

I was accepted the 30th of January and still have not seen anything. Nothing on my transcripts. Nothing on where's my refund. What's going on this year??

So I ended up going on the state refund status and I got a message saying my refund is on hold because I owe “money to another agency” which doesn’t make sense at all because I have paid my taxes every year and you would think it would have said something when I was doing my taxes or would have received letters in the mail. My issue is it doesn’t say anything about what agency or anything, which is frustrating considering I can’t get in touch with anyone to understand. I believe it might have to do with my divorce a few years ago where my ex husband decided he didn’t want to pay taxes anymore and this may still be in the system even though I have cleared my name…. Still frustrating I have no way of getting answers. I know that’s not turbo tax but at the end wouldn’t it have flagged when I got my refund?

@fiercestangjess There would be no way for TT to "flag" anything regarding your state refund.  TurboTax never knows if there are offsets to a user's refund --not from the IRS nor from the state.   That kind of information is never shared with TT.   Your only source of information about your state refund is the state itself.  Contact the state or wait for the state to send you a letter.

If you didn't have any credits or other issues for which the IRS did not start processing returns containing those issues until a certain date (see posts  from others), then IMO not a great sign as possibly despite what IRS has posted perhaps they are way behind or on a slow down.  One of my previous posts ccd from the IRS website says efiled returns "generally" processed in 21 days which I presume means from date of acceptance of return, not when transmitted by you to TT but it seems you are past that time period.  I suspect you already have, but did you also check the IRS website refund status return page to see if any other information for your return other than received/accepted?  Still waiting for my own refund too but had to file later finally by USPS (see other posts for TT trials).  Good luck.

Turbo tax is scamming this year.

72 hours refund hasn't been sent, been using this service for 6 years, never had this issue.

I get the same recorded responses thru the application, phone and online.

This is CRIMINAL. . Businesses, companies, they don't care why you didn't pay just that you did not pay.

Send my return off or I'll seriously have to file a lawsuit against you all. $340 just to be in limbo about my tax return . . Sick

Sorry to hear that you are in TT limbo and I am presuming that means you have no acceptance/rejection of your TT efiled return by the IRS.  Contrary to multiple TT employees claims in posts that TT has nothing to do with your return after you hit the submit button in TT, if you read my previous posts you will see according to financial internet sites that your return is not efiled directly with the IRS (unless you are using the free efile directly at the IRS site which is greatly limited in eligibility and which presumably one would hope goes directly to the IRS but with the government who knows!) as the TT employees are trying IMO to apparently claim/mislead but the efiled return is FIRST as most of us know already sent to a TT processing center where apparently it can be significantly held up by TT for whatever reason some apparently due to IRS rules and some not as many of us with problems have none of the credits or special cases TT employees always try to use as the reason for unreasonable significant delays.  (I could find NO third party tax sw that efiles directly to the IRS; that is not how these third party tax sw efiles work apparently.)  So if the IRS doesn't accept/reject your return or there is no indication your refund return has been logged in at the IRS, I would have to really wonder what is going on and just why TT is trying to claim no responsibility.

And in one of my previous posts, I ccd the IRS website indicating efiled returns (presumably with no issues) are generally refunded in 21 days if I remember correctly.  I also presume this is from the date of acceptance not the day you transmit through TT unless that is the same day which doesn't appear to be happening this year.

I am confused though about your saying you paid TT $340 which is much more than the sw costs even premier--did you pay TT to do some extra service?  Some others have also seemed to indicate they paid for a guaranteed return refund w/in a certain number of days which I also don't understand?  I wasn't aware of those services, sorry if I am misunderstanding some of the posts.  In any case, IMO if you are detailed oriented and organized IMO there should be no reason to be paying TT these extra sort of fees.

Next year I suspect quite a few of us are going elsewhere.  I finally gave up and sent in a hard copy of my return which of course will delay the refund significantly but at least I have proof it was sent.  Good luck.

I am experiencing the same issue except I filed my taxes a month ago and they still have not even been approved. TurboTax estimated my return would be deposited to my bank account by 3/2, it is now 3/6 and my taxes have still not moved through the approval stage.

You can view the actual status of your refund on the IRS website through a link called where’s my refund?

@user5752033

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

You and others have probably seen this link already since it has been posted elsewhere in this thread but here is where to check about refunds:

https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund

Of course if the problem is your return has not been accepted for some reason such as not transmitted by TT for whatever reason, you will just get an error message as I did indicating no such return/return not found.

If you had no special considerations delaying processing of returns (for certain credits/situations etc the IRS has indicated it would not start processing those returns until after a certain date), then you unfortunately may want to consider alternate filing methods.  Some in TT limbo indicated that they received acceptance (or in one case rejection but at least a response) just hours after efiling with a different sw service.  I ended up mailing a hard copy to the IRS as I just could not face having to redo my taxes again in another sw program this year.

Unfortunately typically the longer one waits to file the longer the IRS processing time between acceptance and getting refunds due to higher volumes of returns going in closer to the deadline.

We have definitely seen it which is why we are able to say that it has not been accepted or rejected, just received. I filed my taxes in early February, more than 2 months before the April 18th cut off date and just barely over a month from when we are allowed and able to start filing. It doesn’t seem feasible to file taxes through another system if the IRS states they’ve received our records already. Then they’d have duplicate records and it seems like that would further delay the process - perhaps I am wrong about this but it just seems like things would get messy rather quickly. Overall, I have never had issues like this. The delays are baffling. The lack of communication from the IRS is frustrating. The inability to speak to a human through their phone service is infuriating. It seems hopeless to troubleshoot because there are no answers provided and only AI can hear our questions.
