Why can't I download 1099-div data from Vanguard

Make sure you have selected the Vanguard brokerage account and not the mutual funds account.  Customers have found that when they click on the Vanguard icon in the Select financial institutions section, it didn't give a choice of brokerage or mutual funds. However when they typed in Vanguard instead of clicking on the icon, they did get a choice and were able to select brokerage.

To import from your Vanguard account, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Federal > Wages & Income
  2. Scroll down to the Retirement Plans and Social Security section and click Start next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  3. On the Choose your bank or brokerage page, click the Vanguard tile or type Vanguard in the search .
  4. Then click Continue to begin the import process

Nope, that doesn't work. I get TT message "The primary owner of the brokerage account must be logged in to import this information"

I would suggest you enter them manually in the program.  Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign in to your TurboTax account and select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1099div" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1099div
  • Follow prompts

Why can't I download 1099-div data from Vanguard

The response stating you have to type in the type of Vanguard account is right.  I only have a Vanguard brokerage account.  So when I saw Vanguard, I of course picked it.  As the TurboTax employee says the brokerage/Mutual fund picks are not offered unless you type it in.  The really confusing thing is that it did import the 1099 DIV information - but not a 1099 B that is in the same account.  So I saw the DIV info it had brought in and thought it was ok until later in checking I could not find the 1099 B transactions.  Seems like an issue on the TurboTax side?

Why can't I download 1099-div data from Vanguard

It depends.  You can securely import your 1099-B, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-OID, or 1099-R into TurboTax, provided your broker or financial institution participates in our TurboTax Partner program.

When you get to the place in TurboTax where we ask if you received that form, answer Yes and we'll give you the option to import.

You can also jump straight to the section for your specific 1099 form. Here's how:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open or continue your return.
  2. Search for 1099-B and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Follow the screens and you’ll be able to import your form.

Tip: Be sure to select the right financial institution or brokerage from the list. For example, several participating partners' names start with First National Bank and if you select the wrong First National Bank, you won't be able to import.

You can import up to 1,500 transactions from your financial institution in TurboTax Online.

Go here to see how to take a picture of your 1099-MISC in the mobile app.

Here is a TurboTax article about 1099-B, Proceeds from Broker transactions.

@pfrank1 Has Vanguard sent a message that your documents are ready for download?

Your Vanguard statements may not be available.

Here's the Vanguard tax form schedule.

Why can't I download 1099-div data from Vanguard

I would first try clearing your cache and cookies, then closeout and re-open your browser and log back into TurboTax. When you are back in this area, try the download again. You can import tax documents from Vanguard.by following the steps below to get to the importing section in TurboTax software.

      1. Log into your TurboTax account, if you are not already, and get inside of your return

      2. In the search box in the top right corner, type in "import" and hit enter

      3. From the drop down, select "Jump to import" and this will take you to the Import Summary screen

      4. Choose "Add Other Documents" and this is where you will be able to import your tax documents

      5. Select Import from my bank or brokerage and then type in Vanguard and Continue

       6. This will take you to the screen to enter your login information for your Vanguard account in order to import the information into the software. Enter the login credentials and then select Continue

You may also need to check your brokerage to see if they are allowing third-party access. Although the following Help Article is for Schwab, it is possible that your brokerage has restricted TurboTax's access to your statements unless you grant consent, and you might need to do something similar to what is described here.

If this does not work, you may have to manually input your details that are not downloading by following the instructions below:

What if I can't import my 1099?

Why can't I download 1099-div data from Vanguard

Hello,

May I pile in here?

In 2021 my wife and I had three brokerage accounts at Vanguard. One is registered Joint, one is Trust, one is Individual. (Long story, involves a death in the family.) We also hold two Roth IRA's there. The Joint account is closed, the Individual is still open, but both of those now have a zero balance.

Two weeks ago, the 1099's for the Joint and Trust were ready, and I downloaded the 1099's into TurboTax with no problems. Yes, I selected "brokerage" and not "mutual fund." I also downloaded the two 1099-R's. No problems.

Last night the 1099 composite for the individual brokerage dropped, and I tried to download it this morning, using the document ID like I did for the previous 4 forms. TurboTax says "response from Vanguard Group-Brokerage account: 1099 forms not yet available for tax year." Obviously this isn't true, they are available, and I've already downloaded 4 of the 5.

I spoke with my rep at Vanguard, and she says it's a known issue with TurboTax, that it won't download the brokerage because the balance is zero. That doesn't sound right, because the Joint brokerage is closed, and has a zero balance as well, but it downloaded just fine.

I have cleared cache and cookies from my browser, but no luck. I have transferred $10 into the account to see if that fixes the alleged 'zero balance" problem, but that won't clear until after this Holiday weekend.

Is there any truth to this explanation? Is this a known issue?

Please do not reply with instructions on how to enter a 1099 manually. I know how to do that, and this 1099 is extremely long and complex because of the sale of securities after a death, liquidating an entire portfolio.

Help is appreciated.

There is no current known issue that will affect Turbo Tax due to a $0 balance.

I would suggest contacting us by phone by following the instructions here, so we can look into this deeper. @TMVT
