Why am I being forced to upgrade causing me to lose the majority of my refund for no reason?

If you were promted to upgrade, it is because you had an entry that needed a different program. Your refund/balance due is not final until you enter all your information.

The upgrade did not cause you to lose your refund, the added information did.

In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited now.  Why do I have to upgrade from the Free Edition?
