As of now Form 8915-F is scheduled to be ready on 3/24/2022. Please see IRS forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products for additional information and any changes.

Once the section is available follow these steps to report any further tax to be paid or any repayment:

    1. Login to your TurboTax Account
    2. Click on the Search box on the top and type “1099-R”
    3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
    4. If you do not have any 2021 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2021?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
    5. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?" screen

What if you paid all taxes on it in 2020 and did not make any more distributions  or any repayments in 2021-- why do i still need to wait for this form?

    March 10, 2022

No, if you paid all of the taxes on your 2020 distribution, you do not need Form 8915-F.

If you are getting a message that you have to wait for Form 8915-F and you do not need to file it, you can delete it from your tax return.

If you are using TurboTax Online:

    1. From inside the return, scroll down to Tax Tools on the bottom of the left side menu.
    2. Select Tools.
    3. Click on Delete a form (third on the list at the bottom of the screen).
    4. Find Form 8915 on the list of forms.
    5. Click Delete to the right.
    6. Confirm your Delete.
    7. Click Continue in the lower right.
    8. Click Continue with my return.

If you are the Desktop version (disc or download):

    1. Click Forms toward the upper right corner.
    2. Find Form 8915 on the list on the left.
    3. Highlight it, then click Delete in the lower left corner of the reading pane.
    4. Click on Step by Step in the upper right corner to return to the interview.
    5. You should be able to e-file once those forms are cleared out.

TaxAct 2021 had this form available for use/filing, three weeks ago.  TurboTax is way behind the competition.  TurboTax needs to make extreme changes in administration/programming if they are to maintain their predominant position in tax filing for individuals.  I will certainly continue to use TaxAct 2021 even though it's not at user friendly as TurboTax.  But a little thought and TaxAct is good enough.

Did you file free on Taxact 2021. I have followed the directions on Turbo Tax and i don't think its computing my info correctly so i'm going to try Taxact.

When I'm attempting to enter my disaster reason, Covid-19 is not an option from the drop down menu.  I was specifically told it would be available for use for this purpose!

I cannot find the 8915 F form online. It is asking me to review my 1099 R. Do I just delete this since I did not receive a 1099 R form this year? How do I get to the 8915 F form? I took out for Covid and am wanting to pay the 1/3 for this year but don't know where to start!

Yes, delete the Form 1099-R.  Then when asked if you received a 2021 Form 1099-R answer NO.

Answer Yes when asked if Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?

Answer Yes when asked if you took a Qualified 2020 Disaster Distribution

Check the box that this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020

    In the box 2020 Form 8915-E, line 4, column b - Enter a 0

If the 2020 distribution was from an account that was Not an IRA

2020 Form 8915E Line 9 - Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 9

If the 2020 distribution was from an IRA account

2020 Form 8915E Line 17 -  Enter 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 17

Do not enter anything in the other boxes, leave them blank (empty)

The 1/3 of the amount from the 2020 distribution will be entered on the 2021 Form 1040 Line 4b if from an IRA or on Line 5b if from a retirement plan other than an IRA

You can view your Form 1040 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

Using the desktop editions click on Forms.  Open the Form 1040

I just called TT today (3/28/22) and the form isn't available until 3/31/22. Granted, I was using a download version of TT 2021. If filing taxes directly with TT online, it may be available. Customer Service was struggling to explain to me when the form was going to be available but finally a supervisor was able to confirm when the system should update (3/31/22).

Apparently you spoke with a TurboTax rep who was not very knowledgeable about the availability of the Form 8915-F.

The Form 8915-F was included as a software update for All the TurboTax desktop editions on 03/24

If you are using the desktop editions, update your software.  Click on Online at the top of the desktop program screen.  Click on Check for Updates.

You must go to the Retirement Income section of the program for a Form 1099-R to be able to enter your 2nd year of the 2020 distribution -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home & Business)

    Click on Wages & Income

Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security

On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click on the Start or Update button

On the screen Did you get a 1099-R in 2021? Click on NO, if you did not receive a 2021 Form 1099-R

If you had a Covid-19 related distribution in 2020 and selected to spread the distribution over 3 years -

Answer Yes when asked Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2021?

There is no "start" or "update", only "add another 1099-R" or "continue".  So right from the get go of your instruction, it does not fit.  This is for the online version...

I've tried to delete this form numerous times - it's says it Deleted, I click continue.  The form never actually deletes and I can't proceed.  Any tricks?  This is ridiculous.

I've followed directions multiple times, it does not work.  The form will not delete, even tho is says it's deleted.

Better yet, how do I get a refund from Turbo Tax so I can go elsewhere - since I was charged for taxes I can't even file.  😳

I entered all my info into Taxact as well however I noticed it wasn’t actually calculating my withdrawal as income. It didn’t have line 12 for me to enter amounts only line 13 for the amount to be entered…

Tax form 8915-F for tax year 2022 is STILL NOT available. I phoned TurboTax last week Thursday and they could not give me a release date. The release date has been rescheduled 4 times now.  I am so sick of waiting on TurboTax to release one single form to finish my taxes. Does anyone have any updates on when this form will be online to finish e-filing?

When is the correct form going to be available and for tax year 2022? The software allows the user to select that a 2020 qualified disaster relief distribution was taken related to COVID, but does two things on the form; it fills in box C (which is should not do) with disaster relief code "COVID" AND checks the box in D stating it was a COVID 19 related distribution. The instructions on federal tax form 8915F state to ONLY use Box D if you are reporting a COVID 19 distribution and to leave Box C blank. Please update the software so that when you check the box when completing the user's taxes, it does not populate a COVID disaster relief code that is invalid. It has caused my tax return to be rejected by the federal government thrice now.
