WARNING! I used Turbo Home & Bussiness in 2023 and filed an extension. I submitted payment for taxes owed with the extension. 2024 misapplied 2023 payment to 2024

when installing 2024 and carried forward my info from 2023, without my knowledge it applied 2023 extension payment to my 2024 return and opened a 4868 form. I did not see that form had been opened, it was not used section saying how much I am sending was blank. I submitted my return online expecting a refund, final check from turbo tax said all was good, return submitted and accepted by IRS. after seeing the 2023 payment misapplied to 2024, instead of a refund I am expecting a letter from IRS correcting my return and asking for payment. How do I get TurboTax to notice the error in software?

Since you have already filed your return, once it has been processed, you can submit an Amended Return.

If TurboTax applied your January 15th estimated payment to your tax paid amount, that would be correct.  I can't explain why an extension form 4868 was prepared if you didn't request an extension.  We could take a closer look at this if you're willing to submit a sanitized copy of your return to us (all personal info removed).

If you wish to do this, go to the Online link at the top and choose Submit Tax File to Agent.  Post your token number here.

WARNING! I used Turbo Home & Bussiness in 2023 and filed an extension. I submitted payment for taxes owed with the extension. 2024 misapplied 2023 payment to 2024

as I said in my orginal post "without my knowledge it applied 2023 extension payment to my 2024 return and opened a 4868 form"

so the payment made for my 2023 return on April 15 2024 while filing and extension was misapplied to my 2024 return when I installed 2024 version and had it carry over my personal information and history.

It is not correct for Turbotax to apply my 2023 payment made April 15 2024 while filing an extension.

I did talk to support, who advised me to wait now for IRS to send me a letter revised the return I sent electronically through TurboTax then to call 800 number for how to revise my return on TurboTax.

IT IS INCORRECT TO APPLY MY PAYMENT FOR MY 2023 TAX RETURN AS A PAYMENT FOR MY 2024 TAXES.

This is a software error, I am trying to notify TurboTax and community to be aware of.

Yes you should give them a diagnostic copy of your return.  This will make a sanitized copy of your return without your personal info so they can look at it.   In the Desktop program use these steps:
Select Online (or Help for Mac) at the top of the screen.
Select Send Tax File to Agent.
Click OK.

Token is.    [removed]-63766997

As stated in the beginning,  my 2024 return cleared all final checks,  return submitted and accepted by IRS.

Later I discovered the error.   My 2023 payment made April 25, 2024, was incorrectly forwarded to my 2024 return, as a payment for 2024.   See tax payment worksheet line 9

Also found it on schedule 3 line 10

Form 1040 line 31

I did not request an extension,  I did enter all payments I made and or withheld during the year.

Since I saw we were getting a refund.  I would not need an extension

form 4868 is partially filled out by TurboTax lines 4-6  and line 7 is blank.

I wanted to let TurboTax know of the error in importing my 2023 extension payment from April 15, 2024 into my 2024 return as a payment for year 2024.

Last word from tech support was agreed with me to pay line 6 of form 4868 by April 15, 2024, and when I get a letter from IRS changing my return from a refund to owing,  I am to call the TurboTax number given to me by support to assist in correcting my 2024 TurboTax file so it is accurate.

I see that you have two estimated payments made in 2023 for 2024, on 4/15/24 and 6/17/24 for $2500 each, for a total of $5000.  Is that correct?

I also see that a payment of $7147 was credited to your Tax Payments on Form 1040, Line 31, as 'Amount Paid with Extension'.  However, Form 4868 is correct, showing your total tax of $17174, plus payments made in 2024 of $15476 (your withholdings of $10476, plus the 5K estimated payments), and $0 paid with extension.

However, since the $7147 was transferred to your Form 1040, it shows you with a refund of $5449, rather than the correct balance due of $1698.  So your Form 1040 is wrong, and you'll need to Amend your return after you receive your Refund.  I can't find where the original entry of $7147 came from, since it is not indicated on Form 4868 (which is correct) and it is not one of your Estimated Tax Payments of $2500. When I click on the $7147 on the Tax Payments Worksheet, it points back to your Total Tax due of $17174, which is correct. Was this the amount of your 2023 Extension Payment?  If so, it should not have been included as a payment for 2024, as you stated.

I would agree that you should pay your Balance Due of $1698 by April 15th.

I will refer this for an investigation, since this is the first instance of this I have seen,  and I apologize I don't have a complete answer for you now, but will keep you posted when I learn anything further.

Thank you,

I think it would help the investigation to also have a copy of my 2023 return, which is where the $7000 payment on April 15, 2024 came from as I filed an extension for 2023.

But apparently you can see just from my 2024 return that amount did not come from any entry of tax payment or withholding by me.

Waiting now for a friendly letter from the IRS about their corrections

I appreciate that you appear to understand my issue.

Just thinking out loud.   So you made 2 payments on April 15, 2024?  One for the 2023 Extension $7,147 and a 2024 $5,000  $2,500  Estimated payment?

When did you file 2023?  Did you have a refund for 2023?  Did you manually enter the extension payment into your 2023 return?  Maybe it was already listed from April and got in twice?   Open 2023 program and see if you have any refund applied to 2024.  I would look all though everything in Forms mode and see if the 7,147 shows up anywhere else it shouldn't be.

Also start a new  2024 return and transfer from 2023 again.  Don't enter anything and see if it shows up in 2024 wrong again and all the amounts from 2023 are right.   First thing, better save this return with a name you can tell apart from your real 2024 return and you don't overwrite 2024.  Go to File-Save As.

Yes, I made the $7,147 payment for my 2023 tax year using the voucher that printed with the 2023 return.   I also made the first installment for estimated tax payment for 2024 both on April 15, 2024.   With automatic extension I mailed the hard copy of my 2023 to IRS in October 2024.

???? How could I have a refund for 2023?   I sent the balance owed $7,147.

Again Turbotax printed a voucher that I used for 2023 tax year to send the $7,147.

I no longer have the 2023 software running, Computer was replace,  I have software tax file and the pdf.  ( happy to share both for investigative use.)

looking through 2023 pdf only place I see $7,147 is on the file by mail instructions from Turbotax for 2023, the 2023 voucher, and line 37 of 1040-SR.  Do not see it anywhere else.

As asked I opened a new 2024 return imported 2023 information.   After confirming demographic information, I reviewed 1040 there are no tax payments or the tax credits on line 31.

I cant explain it.

Oh, I thought you made an extension payment for 2023.  You made a Tax Due payment.  An  extension payment would have been on 1040 line 31.  Line 37 was the final tax due.

2023 1040 line 31 is amount from schedule 3 line 15, which is blank.    When filing for an extension you still have to pay taxes owned ( or estimated to be owed )  hence used line 37 and payment voucher generated by turbotax.

2024 1040 line 31has ( in error ) $7,147  schedule 3 line 15 also has $7,147 along with line 10.  all of which I did not enter.

This conversation would be a lot more efficient if I could share both tax returns and discuss it directly.

At this time, I will send a payment for what I  truly owe for 2024 on April 15, 2025.  and will call the 800 # given to me by turbotax tech support on how to amend my 2024 to match my return that the IRS will have.

Thank you for taking the time to go over my issue.
