One thing you should do, once you get TTX opened, is to
1) go up to the menu and select "Online"
2) then from the dropdown menu, select "Updater Preferences".
3) Then select the one where you don't have an internet connection. That "should" stop the prompt to update at every start.
You may be able to install the manual update after that.....without a subsequent prompt to again update.....(but I can't test since I won't bother to buy TTX until after the next major update.)
TT tends to send updates to their software on Wednesday nights into Thursday mornings..... so might be best to check once a week on Thursday mornings and then just before your are ready to file
I start TT and it asks to be updated I click on update and it come back unable to update. can't get into TT.
If you're having trouble updating your TurboTax 2020 for Windows Individual software using the "Check for Updates" method, you can use the link provided below to install the updates manually. I hope this helps.
Manually Update TurboTax for Windows Software (Basic, Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business)
If this is the first time you've updated after the initial installation, what worked for me was uninstalling, disabling my anti-virus (Trend Micro) and reinstalling. I did not have to run as ADMIN. I've had no trouble since and have not had to disable my anit-virus.
1. Uninstalled TT 2020
2. disabled Trend Micro Internet Security
3. connected to the internet using ethernet.
4. ran the setup program from the CD
5. updated turbotax without any error.
Thanks for your post.
Is anyone working this problem? If resolution is not being worked I'll get another tax program. This has been going for two days and no info from TurboTax has been supplied.
If you contact TurboTax support, you can walk through the problem with support over the phone.
What is the TurboTax phone number?
I have the exact same problem. Lew Francis
When the updates are downloaded and installed manually , you still can't run Turbotax because when it is started an update run is required and the same problem occurs even though the manual download and update worked fine???
I have the same problem - can't talk to anyone at Turbotax.
Having the same problem. I ran the manual update file and that seems to go fine.
But then Turbotax wants to check for updates when it opens. If I cancel that, then the
program does not open. If I let it check for updates, it downloads them and then when it
runs: WinPerReleaseMsi it fails out at the very end with some error about a cab file not found.
And since I can not get TurboTax to launch, I can not get to the disable updates setting. As it
is right now, the program needs some updates as some forms (like manual 1099R entry) are not yet in the program and there may other tax code or form changes. TurboTax needs to get this issue resolved. Paid good money for this and I expect to work without issues. Windows 10 Home 64 Bit I might need to buy another program (H&R Block Deluxe) to do my taxes this year)

Katrina,
Turbotax programmers need to get this fixed.
Wasting time on hold for a so called "support specialist"
will not fix this issue.
I have the 187MB manual update instaled. After that is done
then when I open the program it wants to check for updates.
That is when the problem I and others are having occurs.
Below is the error I get when it tries to update:
WinPerReleaseMsi fails to install on Turbotax 2020 Premier
The file: fdp.1CSIDTRF_sfdptt_idf_xtt_rep_riw_smrof
cannot be installed because the file cannot be found in
cabinet file 'Turbo Tax cab'
My computer is running Windows 10 Home 64 and is
up to date.
Just FYI, Turbotax 2020 Deluxe will not update in Windows 10 installed as a virtual machine. The download of the update completes, and then it fails immediately due to some sort of database insertion/data conversion error. This doesn't occur on the exact same version of Windows 10 20H2 running on real hardware. I've tried VMs using VMware Workstation and Oracle Virtualbox - same results. No solutions offered by Intuit Support other than "don't run it in a VM".
