I did everything listed. After waiting 10 minutes. It finally is finished. Then it proceeds to install the update and restart. Then it says I need to download the update again. And stuck on the extracting update.
This is a problem that Intuit needs to fix!
Yes the extraction will finish if you are VERY patient. However, then the software updates and restarts; then the forces you to download and extract the update again.
To be clear this is an unresolved problem that Intuit needs to fix ! TurboTax 2019 Mac is unusable at all in the current state!
Corruption could have occurred in the Application or in an associated preference or support file.
The best remedy is to totally uninstall TurboTax and all associate files and then re-install. That will not delete or change any .tax2020 data file that had already been created with the tax data.
To uninstall the application and all associated files need to be deleted and then the application reinstalled. If there was a state then the state must also be reinstalled.
To remove TurboTax from your computer, you'll need administrative rights.
Here is a FAQ for how to uninstall Mac

OK I restarted and tried the update one more time. this time it works. My recommendation to anyone with this problem...
1 restart the mac
2 install the updates, wait 10 minutes for the unpacking. Then install the update.
3 if the program wants you to download the updates again, cancel out; restart the computer; then redo step 2.
I still contend this is a bug that Intuit needs to fix! But it can be gotten around with hours of frustration and reading posts like this.
This is a terrible solution "champ." This extract issue is an issue of piss-poor coding by the Turbotax developers. It's a huge known issue and Turbotax is simply refusing to look the other way instead of addressing the issue. Next year I'm switching to H&R Block, enough of this nonsense from Intuit.

The amount of time to extract depends on the free RAM memory you have and the number of running processes. It should not take any longer then 2-3 minutes (never has for me).
Had the same issue on my MacBook Pro, running Mojave 10.14.6. TurboTax Home and Business kept hanging on extracting the update. Turned off my AVAST antivirus scans for files opened on the machine. Bingo. Extraction worked like it should. Updated, relaunched and works fine. Turned my AV software file scan back on.
Should not have to do that in order to install this software from a company like Intuit. They need to fix this issue.
Suspect others having similar problems will also find this is due to their AntiVirus software as well.
This has been a problem for years and years on both PC and Mac. In fact merely attempting to install TurboTax Deluxe can take multiple tries. There is no excuse for letting this update issue continue! Once you do get the thing extracted after waiting forever, then it takes forever to install. Why should it be so slow in this day and age. I have new Mac and new PC. Same problem on both although worse on the Mac. I wanted TurboTax 2020 on both computers. They can't claim it is a slow computer or slow internet connect for the updates, either. How about a answer, TurboTax? What do you have to say about this years-long issue.
Today is Sept 11, 2021.
Turning off antivirus worked for me too. Instantly. Thank you.
Thank you for this post. I ran into this issue today and what do you know: I have AVAST AV installed and your post sure made it easy to try your solution. It worked! I agree, something is wrong here if Intuit is ignoring this.
I have the exact same issue. Have been using turbo. Tax for 10 years without issue. First time ever.

Troubleshoot TurboTax for MAC updating issues
Thanks for this post. I had the same problem of the updated stalling when nearly done with the "Extracting" step forever. Repeatedly downloading, restarting the Mac didn't help.
Then I turned off Avast Core Shields for File and Web (see below), and again downloaded the update. After the download completed, "Extracting" stalled for maybe 30 seconds but then completed. After that I turned Avast Core Shields back on.

I am having the same problem. iMac with i9, 16 Gig Ram, Monterey 12.3.1. Task Manager shows TurboTax hardly using any CPU, Memory I/O, or Disk I/O. This should be pretty darn easy for you to reproduce in your software development lap as many people are reporting this. Please do not tell us to re-install and all of that as this is clearly not a corruption problem since it does finally work after 10+ minutes. May I ask if you have entered a bug in your bug reporting system and whether you have tried to reproduce this problem? Thank you.
Yep - had this problem today and did exactly what you suggested. Update finished immediately. THIS IS THE SOLUTION !!!!
