If you have started to enter information such as a W-2, and don't see the meter, go to the Federal Review section. Click all the way through ignoring the prompts to fix things and the meter should turn back on.
Then return to the section needed to enter your other income or deductions/credits. @tippytaskmaster @maueze @atebit
This didn't work for me
Thank you!! This worked for me! I had tried everything including deleting my return and starting over. I'm so happy to see the running total on top. I can finish my taxes now!
I finally got it to work after trying everything else, but first had to clear my return and start over (not optimal but worth it to get the totals to show up). As soon as I re-entered my first W2 I clicked on Federal Return and continued past all of the prompts asking me to fix things and the running total finally showed up on top! Important to note that you click on the Federal Review button and not the Review button under State Taxes. So far it's staying on there for me as I go back and complete the rest of my return.
None of the "fixes" worked last week when I initially posted this. At this point it's all irrelevant because my return is complete, I owe $3000 after getting refunds for more than the past ten years (#FJB), and I cannot go back and view my return or any of the forms online, I can only download a PDF of my return. Previous versions of TurboTax let you easily search for forms and edit them, it's not as intuitive this year. I would like to try some other scenarios to see if I missed something, which would not have been necessary if I could have seen the running total while originally doing this so I could have adjusted in the first place!
So frustrating. I think I'll give HR Block a try next year... I've heard several people say that it has become a much better app than previous versions.
I got it to work. Thank you for this workaround.
Thank you for the tip! Selecting Tax Tools, then Tools, then Review Tax Summary at least lets us see our numbers (< or >) owed in real time. It is not ideal, but it is an easy work-around. Why would Turbo Tax remove such a valuable tool!?! I appreciate you!
I understood that it wasn't final, but I am not a fan of removing the option entirely. Honestly if another service offers this, I will probably switch. Taxes are so stressful, just a place to check estimates makes a huge difference. And I used it as a checks and balances. My confidence is much lower without that feature.
You shouldn't have to do all of that to get it showing. It should work like it did in years past.
Totally agree on it should be at least optional using a toggle on/off button.
I agree with others that I will not continue to use TurboTax because I cannot see the running liability. If I had known that when I started, I would have switched to another program.
I found it! It's kind of a pain to get to, but go over to the left menu and click on "tax tools"; then "tools"; then a popup window will open. On that window, choose "view tax summary". You'll find your number at the bottom of that summary. Unfortunately, you'll have to do that everytime you want to check your running amount due, but for now, it works.
Here is a FAQ: Why don’t I see the tracker that shows my refund or taxes owed?
This is a HORRIBLE change. In the meanwhile, click on the Tax Tools drop down menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Then select, "tools." Then select "View tax summary." That will show you a summary with the balance due or refund estimates at the bottom. Far inferior to showing the running balance at the top. All engineers should be fired for this gross misstep.
none of this works for me
I need to watch it because I OWE money, not getting a refund
I will never use turbo tax again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
