TurboTax - Goodwill Charitable Donations - Not showing up in Form 1040

Hi,

I entered Goodwill charitable Donations with multiple dates as 140.00

When I go the final form 1040, it does not show up these charitable discounts.

Entered as

Non-cash discount

Items - Kids items - self declared type - multiple dates - total donations as $140.00

It does not show in the final form 1040.

What needs to be corrected?

Thanks

SV

Unless you have enough itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction the Goodwill donation will have no effect.

A charitable donation almost never changes your tax due or refund all by itself.  First, your donation does not count "dollar for dollar"--it is calculated by a percentage based on your tax bracket.  You need a LOT of other itemized deductions like mortgage interest or property taxes, medical expense, etc. to itemize and exceed your standard deduction.

Your itemized deductions have to be more than your standard deduction before you will see a change in your tax owed or tax refund.  The deductions you enter do not necessarily count “dollar for dollar;” many of them are subject to meeting  tough thresholds—medical expenses, for example, must meet a threshold that is pretty hard to reach. (Only the amount that is MORE than 7.5% of your AGI counts)   The software program uses all the IRS rules that apply to the expenses you enter, and it tells you if you have enough to use your itemized deductions or if using the standard deduction is more advantageous for you.  Under the new tax laws, some deductions have been capped—there is a $10,000 limit to the itemized deductions for state, local, property and sales taxes.

Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income.  It is not a refund.  You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12a of your 2021 Form 1040.

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,100  (65 or older + $1350 per spouse)

If you are taking the Standard Deduction only cash donations can be entered of up to $300 if filing as Single, MFS or HOH.  Up to $600 cash donations can be entered if filing as Married Filing Jointly.

Those donations are shown on Form 1040 Line 12b.

A charitable contribution is usually entered as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.  The total of all itemized deductions must be greater than the Standard Deduction for your filing status to have any affect on your tax return.

@sv_siri  Are you talking about charitable donations with the standard deduction, on Form 1040 line 12b (for 2021)? That's only for cash donations. Non-cash donations cannot be included there. Non-cash donations can only be used as an itemized deduction.

I am giving more details to understand,

using Turbo Tax Premium Desktop on Windows

Standard Deduction

Married filing jointly

Four charitable donations are added.

Three will show up in Form 1040.

Goodwill of Silicon Valley is not showing up. Do I have to mark these as Cash instead of Kids items, in order to show up on donations?

Thanks

If your donations were not cash donations, you cannot enter them as cash donations.   If you donated children's clothing, toys, etc. then they go on a Schedule A.   If you do not have enough itemized deductions for a Schedule A then those donations do not have any effect on your refund or tax due.

Thanks @xmasbaby0 , @rjs , @DoninGA for answering

For future post reference (to all), I am typing these:

  • Since kids items donated are non-cash and also I am doing standard deductions it is not showing in form 1040 line 12b. It will show in Schedule A
  • It will not show in my case as I am doing standard deduction.

Appreciate all replies

@sv_siri  For future reference, the option to deduct charitable donations in addition to the standard deduction was only available for 2020 and 2021. Unless Congress extends it, it will not be available for 2022 and later.

@sv_siri  You can click "Mark as Best Answer" on a reply. (Click the three dots in the top right corner.) That will flag the question as answered. But you do not have to do that. Whether or not you do, the discussion will remain in the forum for future reference.
