The IRS keeps rejecting my return. And says my last year AGI doesn’t match. But I’m looking at it. And it’s exactly what i typed in

Talk about a Catch 22

The IRS may not have your 2020 AGI in their database.  If the IRS rejects the e-filed federal tax return, then the state return must also be rejected.  The state return must be filed at the same time as the federal return.  Or the state return can be e-filed after the federal return has been e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-file your 2021 tax returns again.

I had the same problem.  I found a utube video where the speaker simply put in "0" (zero) instead of the AGI number from hia 2020 return and he said his return was accepted.  I did the same and mine too was accepted.  Wyt this worked is a mystery!!!

No mystery.  If  you filed late or the IRS processed it late then it did not got entered into the IRS database.  Not unusual at all.

ENTER 0 FOR AGI. The IRS took a long time last year to process 2020 returns so the AGI didn't get entered in time.  Especially if you mailed it.  That works for most people. See,

If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

The IRS rejected my son's 2022 return because of the incorrect AGI, but I have his 2021 return in front of me (an amended return) and the AGI on 1040X is exactly what I typed in. What can I do?

Use the AGI from the original 2021 federal tax return Form 1040 Line 11.

If that is also rejected then enter a 0 (zero) for the 2021 AGI and e-file again.

Due to the delayed processing of 2021 tax returns by the IRS there is a very good possibility that the IRS does not have your 2021 AGI in their database.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2021 AGI and e-file the 2022 tax return again.
