Tax Year Prior to 2020: I recieved a deposit and it said TCS TREAS 449 for TAX REF for an amount much less than my expected return. Called offset number and it said i dont owe anything. Anyone?

@lxo143 TurboTax never knows about offsets to your refund.  The do-it-yourself tax software only "knows" the result of the data you entered and the result it generated.  Federal and state refunds do not arrive together.  It is possible that you are still waiting for one or the other.  If there was an offset to your refund by the IRS or state you will receive a letter a few weeks after receiving the reduced refund.

It looks like you must have had an offset for an unpaid Fed or State obligation.  If your refund is less than expected and you see a coinciding TCS TREAS 449 offset, this means that the tax payers refund has been reduced to repay a debt collected through the Treasury Offset Program. This program is designed to collect delinquent debts that are owed to states and federal agencies.

@Cooper04 Since no one can see your refund we cannot answer you.   Some guesses---the IRS pays interest on very delayed tax refunds; the IRS is issuing extra refunds for tax paid on unemployment if you filed before the tax laws changed; the IRS is issuing "plus up" refunds for people whose stimulus amounts were affected by changes in their AGI after they filed.....

Here is what the code means:

When the IRS processes your refund and on the transcript you see TCS TREAS 449 for TAX REF that means the following: "If your client's refund is less than expected and you see a coinciding TCS TREAS 449 offset, this means that the taxpayers' refund has been reduced to repay a debt collected through the Treasury Offset Program. This program is designed to collect delinquent debts that are owed to states and federal agencies."
