What year's TurboTax are you using, how did you get the box to appear, and will it populate with info from your previous year's TurboTax? The problem has been described as intermittent.

Using TurboTax 2024 Premier desktop edition.
Put the cursor in the box you want to use for supporting details.
Click on Edit at the top of the desktop program screen. Click on Add Supporting Details
Go up to EDIT - Add Supporting Details. Don't know about it populating with prior year info.
If the box to enter data has a $0 prefilled the supporting details box will have the information from the prior year entered in Description field. However, there will not be a dollar amount entered.
As the error reports are repeating, for up to 5 years, it is intermittent.
It is quite common to work the first time a details list is entered, and just as intermittently buggy when you try to go back and modify those entries, and/or attempt to make changes to a list that was entered in a prior year.
There are multiple threads of the same topic using variations of the same problem but slightl different vocabularies.
I just downloaded and installed TurboTax 2024 Deluxe Fed and State to check this myself. My initial try in a Medical Expense box did work using Edit -> Add Supporting Details, and previous line items from 2023 were populated without amounts, as expected. The older "right click in box" to select Add Supporting Details did not work. I can live with that if it doesn't go intermittent as User kmh72756 reports (and as I experienced in previous years). I probably won't be able to exercise this more fully until tax time. Fingers crossed.
I had this problem intermittently.
For example, I found that if I removed a Supporting Detail from some of the Medical Expenses Step-by-step forms, I could no longer add one back in, either by double-clicking, typing Control+I, right-clicking (which never seems to work any more), or using the Edit/Add Supporting Details menu.
However, by exiting TurboTax (saving my work) and restarting it, I was able to add one again.
I highly recommend that anyone encountering this issue restart TurboTax and that will likely resolve the issue for you.
Thanks for posting your workaround. I decided to go directly to "Forms" this year for Medical Expenses to avoid the problem. It still amazes me that TurboTax has not fixed this.
