I am trying to amend and e-file my 2024 taxes (Fed & NY) which were originally e-filed using the TurboTax desktop (downloaded) TY2024 version on Windows. Like others, I’m encountering the invalid “Correct Your Signature Date” issue which prevents e-filing. Manually filing requires lots of paper, postage, and incurs significantly more delay in processing by the IRS.
2025 update. This problem is preventing me from e-filing my amended 2024 return, even though TT says you should be able to do it this year. I called their Resource Desk, who were clueless but said they would "escalate it." They also said wait for updates 🤣. You can't e-file till Jan 26, so I will try again then but I doubt that's the problem. It appears to be a software glitch. Does anyone know of any tax software that allows you to e-file an amended return? But, even if there is, I guess we would have to enter the original return and the amended return? That would be a lot of work. Thanks, TT!

Amended return prior to tax year 2025 cannot be e-filed using TurboTax. They can only be printed and mailed.
Only the Form 1040-X and any changed forms or schedules due to the amendment need to be filed. NOT the original or amended Form 1040 nor any of the other original forms and schedules.
Got it, no e-file of amended return, even though TT says NY must e-file and I was able to e-file an amended NY return with TT in 2022. On the "Filing Instructions for your 2022 New York Amended Tax Return" from TT, it clearly says: "Do not mail a paper copy of your tax return. Since you filed electronically, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance already has your return." And when I print "tax forms for filing" for my amended 2024 return, TT includes updated versions of the original 1040 and IT-201 for NY, based on the amended forms. I believe I also included these with my amended 2022 filings too. I will mail the amended 1040 but why did TT allow an e-file of IT-201X in 2022 but won't allow it for 2024? I can guess that forcing me to change the filing date from yesterday to a date in 2025 closed the e-filing door on November 15, 2025, as TT says but why force me to backdate in the first place? This is not a glitch in the TT software? And, since I submitted updated originals of the 1040 and IT-201 for 2022, shouldn't I do the same for 2024? Any reason not to? Please advise on these two issues. Thanks
Timing of filing an amended return using TurboTax was, at one time, critical. In prior years, you had to file by the extended due date (10/15) sometimes a few days later if your return was rejected.
See this Turbotax website regarding e-filing amended 2023-2025 returns. This seems to be a recent change.
Note, you are not the first to post that they can not e-file one of these years amneded return. 2025 - 1040-X won't be ready until Mid Feb 2026
.
OK, I give up. on e-filing amended NY IT-201X 2024 return, even though I was allowed to do it in 2022 (Why???)
So, my remaining question is TT shows an updated 1040 and IT-201 (with original taxes owed minus the amended refund) in addition to the amended 1040X and IT-201X, and I submitted these with the amended fed and state returns for 2022. Is there a reason why I should not submit the updated 1040 and IT-201 with the amended 1040X and IT-201X for 2024? I don't want the amended forms (with refunds) to be rejected because I didn't submit the updated original forms but if they're not expecting them, maybe I shouldn't? Thanks.
Only certain paid tax pros using professional tax software can e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax. Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in. Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.
NY does an effective job of scaring people into thinking they cannot file by mail.
New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns. If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed. It has to be mailed. It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

@xmasbaby0 does TurboTax lie when it says you can file amended 2023,2024 and 2025 returns if you used TurboTax originally? Or did the thread leave out important details?
@Mike9241 I cannot get that link to work----all I get is a white screen. smh....I am very skeptical of trying to e-file past year amended returns.
I got the link to open and IMHO it is all TT nonsense. Says you can e-file an amended 2024 return but I can't, says you can't e-file amended 2022 but I did. Shaking MY head.

However, there's a chance your return can't be e-filed based on your unique situation. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return.
If you're amending your return for 2022 or earlier, you need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return.
Your amended return can take up to 20 weeks for the IRS to process. If further review of your return is necessary, the IRS may take longer.
Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.
In answer to your question, yes, I filed the original 1040 and IT-201 with Turbotax. Doesn't seem to make a difference re e-filing amended 1040X and It-201X, so I've given up on that and will mail both.
My only question remains: TT shows an updated 1040 and IT-201 (with original taxes owed minus the amended refund) in addition to the amended 1040X and IT-201X, and I submitted these with the amended fed and state returns for 2022. Is there a reason why I should not submit the updated 1040 and IT-201 with the amended 1040X and IT-201X for 2024? I don't want the amended forms (with refunds) to be rejected because I didn't submit the updated original forms but if they're not expecting them, maybe I shouldn't? Thanks.
