I am at the end of filing my taxes with TurboTax, I have not hit the actual file or submit button.  My question is in the very beginning a question was asked "Did you receive a Stimulas Check".  I answered "Yes" and actually I did not.  I answered "No" at the end when it asked if I received a third Stimulas check but how do I go back to the beginning and change my answer to "No' for the first time I was asked that question about Checks 1 and 2.

There are no questions about stimulus #1 or #2 on a 2021 tax return.   You will only be asked about EIP #3.

Go to Federal Review and see what you said for the recovery rebate credit.   You can get ONLY the 3rd EIP on a 2021 return.   If you already received it, there should be nothing on line 30 of your 2021 Form 1040.   If you did not receive it then you should see an amount on line 30.

If you did not receive the 1st and/or 2nd EIP payments the only way to get them is by filing a 2020 tax return.   You cannot get those payments on a 2021 return.   You have to use the recovery rebate credit on a 2020 return.

Did you file a 2020 return?   Was there any amount on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040?   Or does the IRS show that they sent you the 1st or 2nd payments?  Check your online account.

You do not need to go back to the first question if you answered "No" the second time (all questions are about the third stimulus). If you qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit because you did not receive the third stimulus payment and answered "No" to the question then you will see the credit on line 30 of Form 1040.

Please be aware, that the Recovery Rebate Credit for the first and second stimulus payments can only be claimed on the 2020 tax return (How do I amend my 2020 return?)

To preview Form 1040:

  1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left menu
  2. Click "Tools"
  3. Click "View Tax Summary" in the Tool Center window
  4. Click on "Preview my 1040" on the left

To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. After entering all your information click "Search" at the top right and type "Stimulus".
  2.  Follow the jump to link (if you do not qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit the stimulus questions will not come up).
  3. On the screen "Let's double-check the amount you received" you will be asked about the amount of third stimulus payment you received. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  4. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as The Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of Form 1040.

Please see What are the eligibility rules for the Recovery Rebate Credit? for additional information.
