Hi,
I worked in CA for 8 months, and then jumped to another company in WA for another 4 months. and CA has state tax while WA does not.
Do I need to pay CA state tax for the whole year or just the 8 months in CA? Is turbotax smart enough to do it automatically based on W2 or I need to tell it when do i start to work in WA?

Part-year residents are only taxed on income earned while living and/or working in a state so you would only be taxed on income earned while you lived and worked in California.
Washington has no state tax so any income earned in WA is free from state tax.
Thanks for reply.
May I ask do you know how does it define the residential state?
For example, I moved from CA to WA on June. But I kept working on a CA company until August. And my CA company W-2 is indicating that I am working in CA.
Will turbotax get the residential state from W2, or from the date I told it?
Thank you
TurboTax only knows the information you enter into the program. If you were a part-year California resident, TurboTax will use the dates you entered in My Info as the dates you lived in California and Washington.
Talk with your employer is your workplace continues to withhold CA tax. They should not if you are a WA resident.
