I filed Married Filing Jointly in 2023. In 2024, we want to file taxes as Married Filing Separately. When I opened Turbotax 2024 Deluxe desktop version, it automatically imported 2023 returns and asked if my status was MFJ, like last year. When I said it is Married filing Single, it gave me two choices:
1. Open a new return and start without import.
2. Continue with the current import and manually exclude spouse details.
In both options, I am getting a red box in the next step with 'Some Error Occurred' Message, in the very first step of gathering Personal Info. It won't let me proceed.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you used Turbo Tax last year with your spouse you should start a brand new account or return for yourself and not transfer from last year. You cannot remove a spouse or switch the order of names. Are you on Windows or Mac? Go up to File-New tax return.
Joint is almost always better. Here's some things to consider about filing separately……
In the first place you each have to file a separate return, so that's two returns. And if you are using the Online version that means using 2 accounts and paying the fees twice. The Desktop CD/Download program would be better to use.
Many people think they come out better when filing Married Filing Separate but they are probably doing it wrong. If one person itemizes deductions on Schedule A then the other one must itemize too, even if it's less than the standard deduction, even if it is ZERO! And if you are in a Community Property state it can be complicated to figure out.
And there are several credits you can't take when filing separately, like the
EITC Earned Income Tax Credit
Child Care Credit
Educational Deductions and Credits
And contributions to IRA and ROTH IRA are limited when you file MFS.
Also if you file Married Filing Separately up to 85`% of your Social Security becomes taxable right away even with zero other income.

Hi Volvogirl
Thanks for your response.
I am using the Windows Desktop version of TurboTax 2024 Deluxe.
I tried starting a brand new return (without importing), even then I get an error message in a red box in the Personal Info gathering section with the error message 'Some Error Occurred'. So I am not sure if there is a bug in the desktop version or something else.
Any insights or help to resolve will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think you should try reinstalling Turbo Tax. And update Windows. Reinstall and troubleshooting Turbo Tax for Windows.
