Return is listed as a duplicate. First filing of a return. Did extension in April.

I just tried. to file electronically and it said it is a duplicate.  Only did an extension in April, no return

Are you 100% certain you did not inadvertently e-file your entire return in April?

I am certain taxes were not done. The return is for my brother in law and he just located his W2 and mortgage statement the other day. It’s a long story but I’ve done his taxes for 15 years at least.  There  is no one else who would help him.

It could be an honest mistake on someone else’s return.  Someone could have accidentally typed a ssn wrong on their return and got his by mistake.  The only thing you can do is mail the return.

Yes, that is possible.  I’ll have him mail the return. Now I want to get a refund on the fee I paid to e-file the state return.
