The IRS supports adding attachments of supporting documentation to an e-filed return but turbotax does not. An example of this is when filing form 8885 (HCTC), which requires submitting supporting documents, which I must snail-mail separately when e-filing. In past years the IRS failed to link the mailed paper to the e-filed return, which then generated a letter from the IRS of an incomplete return. I then had to resend the paper to the IRS multiple times. Typical turnaround for a refund in this case has been 12-18 weeks. It is time for turbotax premier to support attachments like this to e-filed returns. See Attached IRS instructions for form 8885, page 6, under "efiled returns"
The following forms are also affected by the need to attach supporting documents:

3115
3468
4136
5713
8283

TurboTax is lacking a response on what they are doing about this problem. Do you think we can get a response from Turbo Tax? Hello anybody home
The IRS does not allow taxpayers to attach "supporting documents" to an e-filed return; e-filed returns can only include forms that the IRS (and states) have approved for e-filing.
The list of forms above (@bdipalmo) must be mailed (paper) to the IRS with Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file Return.
Form 8453 is a cover sheet for supporting forms that must be mailed to the IRS. It allows the IRS to identify the e-filed return that requires the supporting forms.
From the instructions for Form 8453:
Purpose of Form
Use Form 8453 to send any required paper forms or supporting documentation listed next to the checkboxes on Form 8453 (don’t send Form(s) W-2, W-2G, or 1099-R).
Thank you very much! I'm filing 8283 with appraised values and has signatures on the form as required. It would be much easier to attach with the filing than send separate. I'm sure they might never meet.
Oh well, maybe they will catch up some day.
