this is disappointing. a friend switch tax softwares Tax ACT and filed with ease. i think no more turbotax if they can't figure this out.
I got to put everything in for the 8915, but when I got to the federal review it asked for a Disaster name. I talked to an expert and they said to put in Covid for the name so I did. I went on to efile and reviewed my forms before I filed and on the 8915f it says do not put Covid in section c for disaster name, so I didn’t file and restarted taxes to get back to that form again….. has anyone else ran into this and know how to get passed that without having to put in the wrong Disaster name?
Also, which amount do I enter as a distribution on my 2021 1099R TurboTax form? The total amount that was on my 2020 1099 or just the 1/3 portion that I need to pay taxes on this year?
You do not enter anything on a Form 1099-R if you did not receive a 2021 Form 1099-R. Delete the form you started and when asked if you received a Form 1099-R answer NO. Then answer YES to the questions for receiving a disaster distribution. Then you can enter the amount of the 1/3 of the 2020 distribution in both boxes for Line 9 if the 2020 distribution was from a 401(k) or both boxes for Line 17 if from an IRA.
Thank you! I think I got it all sorted now.
Thank you so much for your help. But 🤔 my tax refund did not reflect any change. So I am confused a bit. Is my return okay to file? Will I get a bill or something later on for the taxes on the disaster relief amount?
Ok, I figured out my problem. The question that says enter 0 if you checked the box on line 9. I assumed leave blank because I didn’t check the box. Instead, you have to enter the line 9 amount.

@Ricottilli I just put covid for disaster name anyway...and it went through, no problems. Just make sure to look at the forms view and make sure the Covid box is checked. I got no errors during reiew and was able to file electronically.
So I need help. When I filed in 2020 we had a 1099R it had all the info including the amount withdrawn and the federal tax withheld. When iam reporting the 2nd year, TT has me paying federal by alot but I didnt have to pay the first year. So when I read the reason why it says I did not pay enough federal withholding. I was able to find the problem. In the 2020 1099r the federal withholding was 10k, so when reporting the 2nd year its acting like I never had federal tax withholding on the funds I took In 2020. So iam I missing something or iam I screwed.
Do not add your 1099 from 2020 to your 2021 return. Delete it. Fill out the questionnaire presented in the 1099-R section about disaster withdrawals.
Downloaded today's turbo tax updates and the 8915-F was included. Very easy to use
@usako01284 The withheld taxes were all applied to your 2020 tax amount including the first 1/3 of your distribution. So you're having to pay taxes on the 1/3 for 2021 and then next year on the 1/3 for 2022. So yes, screwed.
The form is available now.
Guys,
I’m the one who entered COVID in the FEMA disaster field when that error came up in the early AM hours of 3/24, and I was able to e-file and both fed/state have accepted my return. Since then, I’ve seen a lot of discussion on this thread that has me worried.
My 8915-F looks like this, according to the field letters/numbers
A. X 2021
B. X 2020
C. (1) COVID
8. X NO
12. 1/3 of my distribution
13. same as above ^
15. same as above ^
16. X NO
And that’s it. Did I do it wrong?
For context, this was a 401k distribution with no repayments.
If I did do it wrong, what then? I have to amend it? And if I don’t - will the IRS tell me it’s wrong?
Thank you to any and every one willing to help! (And not charging $60 for the LIVE product to talk to someone when they clearly dropped the ball here!)
Similar question...When my wife and I took our distributions, I had no state tax withheld however the agent handling her distribution said that our state requires the full amount of state tax to be withheld upon withdrawal. As a result the 2020 1099-R she received reflected the state taxes paid on line 14. Shouldn't this negate any further state tax from being paid on her portion going forward? If so how do we get Turbotax to address this?
