when the iRS gets to look at whether or not you get stimulus, if your 2019  return has not been processed the iRS will look at the 2018 return.    However, the actual credit will be computed using your 2020 return.  what is going out now is an advance.     if you support yourself (contribute over 1/2 your support) , your parents can't claim you.  you should then file 2019 claiming yorself and make it your parents problem.  unless circumstances change 2020 you should claim yourself

Tax Year Prior to 2020: What if my parents claimed me as a dependent in 2019 but I no longer live with them in 2020 can I still claim the stimulus check?

from Pennsylvania and have Never filed taxes before, so I’m completely new to this I apologize!

am I eligible for a stimulus payment?

If I was claimed by my parents for both 2018 and 2019, (I was 17, & 18 in those years.)  but my parents said: even tho I was claimed as a dependent; I didn’t “qualify” or wasn’t “eligible” to be claimed, in the sense that they didn’t receive money back for me in either their 2018 or 2019 returns, but did for my 4 siblings (16 & under.) for both years. And they have also received stimulus payment for both of them, and my 4 younger siblings. Also if I’m not eligible for a stimulus payment due to my parents claiming me even tho I didn’t qualify or wasn’t eligible to be claimed, is it possible for Them to amend their 2019-18 taxes un-listing me as a dependent, and me filing my own 2019 taxes stating I wasn’t claimed Would I be eligible?
Thank you so much and again sorry for sounding uneducated!

Tax Year Prior to 2020: What if my parents claimed me as a dependent in 2019 but I no longer live with them in 2020 can I still claim the stimulus check?

question: my mom claimed me on her 2018 taxes, but not 2019 and i filed as not an independent in 2019. HOWEVER, for 2019 taxes i checked the box that said that I "can be claimed as a dependent" on my return. I also put that i would not be claimed as a dependent. in other words, i was not a dependent in 2019, but i checked a box that i COULD be claimed as one. will i get my stimulus check? @VictorW9

The answer is no because you can't be both independent and a dependent  you need to refile as an individual if you can. Mistakes happen and the IRS makes mistakes also. So don't worry just file form 1040-X

@Rosa_ramos

children over the age of 16 are not eligible for the $500

if you can be claimed by someone else, you are not eligible for the $1200

so, no, he won't ..sorry

Tax Year Prior to 2020: What if my parents claimed me as a dependent in 2019 but I no longer live with them in 2020 can I still claim the stimulus check?

I’m a 22 year old college student. My parents claimed me as a dependent in 2019 but I will be claiming myself as independent on my 2020 taxes. Since the stimulus is based off of 2019 taxes but is a 2020 tax credit, does this mean I will receive the full $1200 stimulus in my 2020 tax refund?

Tax Year Prior to 2020: What if my parents claimed me as a dependent in 2019 but I no longer live with them in 2020 can I still claim the stimulus check?

This is my question:
We have 9 children.

I had #9 July 2019 when #1 (who was 20 ) moved out- but she was a dependant up until then and was claimed as a dependant on our 2018 taxes.
We filed for our taxes for 2019 and did not claim her back in March. She also did her own taxes and did not file as a dependant in March.

We received our stimulus but cannot determine if it is sans #1 dependant or sans #9.

#1 still has not received her stimulus & status shows as "Cannot determine eligibility".

How do we find out which year they processed for taxes to calculate our stimulus, and if they credited us already for 2018 taxes but her taxes show she is eligible for the stimulus through her 2019 filings- how would that work? Also do  you know the cuttoff date you had to get your taxes in by in order for them to go by the 2019 filings?

@Jkeirns5 - correct

  • The stimulus payments are really based on your 2020 tax return (income, dependents, etc).
  • The IRS is using either 2018 or 2019 – whatever is available  - to ESTIMATE that payment
  • When you file next year there will be a “settle up” section on the tax return.
  • If you are due more stimulus (and this would include where you are not a dependent  in 2020), you will receive it through the 2020 tax filing as an additional refund
  • If you received too much stimulus (not the issue here), by law , you are not required to return it

@Jynuine - children over the age of 16 were not eligible for the stimulus.... so you would have Not received $500 for child #1.

as long as child #1 did not check the box saying she could be a dependent on someone else's tax return, she would be eligible for the stimulus.....

regardless, for #1, it will work out in the end....but could take until 2020's tax return to resolve itself. (worst case) .

  • When you file next year there will be a “settle up” section on the tax return.
  • If you are due more stimulus (and this would include where you simply never received it), you will receive it through the 2020 tax filing as an additional refund.
  • If you received too much stimulus (not the issue here), by law , you are not required to return it

does that help?

My dad did the same with me, I moved out in July 2019 and have been on my own since then. When I did live with him, I paid my own bills: My phone bill, part of utilities, food, and clothes. When I filed my taxes this year as of 2020 for the year of 2019 (first time on my own) he told me to, “put down that someone can claim you” knowing that I had no idea what that meant.

if My parents claimed me so I’m not eligible for the stimulus payment, but I filed my own 2019 tax return as well, and my parents amend their 2019 return to un list me as a dependent will I need to file my 2019 taxes again? Or will I need to amend my own tax return and file again?

If you filed your 2019 taxes and said that you can be claimed by your parents then you need to correct the return. Please talk to tax expert to help straighten it out
