I asked for an extension earlier this year and it is about to end in October 16th but my W2 is still showing the wrong SSN, the people in charge of updating my info say that could take weeks to get it fix. If not having my W2 by October 16, can I ask for a new extension?

There are no second extensions. If you miss the October deadline, the online software and e-filing will be closed down and you will need to use downloaded desktop software on a full PC or Mac, and file by mail. If the only thing wrong with your W-2 is the SSN, e-file it now and put in the correct SSN for your own information. Eventually the IRS will receive the W-2C--but keep nagging the employer for it until they take care of it!
Hello Cassandradlfc,
Sorry to hear your till struggling with getting your W2 corrected.
The normal process for having a W2 corrected by an employer is to inform te employer and ask them to correct the W2, and then the employer will usually oblige, and provide you with the corrcted W2(called a W2C), If the employer does not provide it, after you attempted to have your employer issue a corrected form, you would then contact the IRS and initiate a Form W-2 complaint to address this matter. However, being that there is no way they will be able to furnish this form to you prior to the extension deadline, it is recommended that you complete your taxes by using a substitute W2, Form 4852, in TurboTax.
The folowing link will provide step by step instrutions and additional information:
Completing a Substitute W2- Form 4852 in TurboTax
It is also recommended that in orer to protect your social security benefits, that you keep a copy of your Form 4852 until you begin receiving social security benefits, just in case there's a question about your work record and/or earnings in a particular year.
If you receive a corrected Form W-2 after you filed your return with Form 4852, and the information differs from the information reported on your return, you wil want to amend your tax return.
As per your question"Can I ask for a new extension?"
Unfortunately the answer to this question is no, you can’t extend your tax deadline past the extended deadline of October 17,2023.
Hopefully this helps!!
Best Wishes,
Terri
