Can a senior(single filer) with no income and a family of four (married filing jointly) at the same address file choose to file different tax returns?

Then why does the senior single person with no income want to file a return? Sounds like he can be a dependent on the other Joint return. But the address doesn't matter or affect filing.

You can---but if you have no income what are you trying to do? Why do you want to file a tax return? Are you claimed as a dependent by someone else?
