I don't know what to say. I've been using TT for decades for end-of-the-year tax planning, and this is the only year they have ever failed me (unless you want to count that time in 2000 when they shipped rootkit malware on the CD, but that's another story).
I'm using FreeTaxUSA to do my planning. The 1099-R isn't the only issue. There's 1099-B as well as well as my state's return (which is flat tax and hasn't changed in years).
Hey Intuit: PRIORITIZE STUFF THAT PEOPLE NEED RIGHT NOW! I got an email today that the Moving Expenses form was ready! Oh boy, I bet dozens of people need that.
Thanks balditax for the dinkytown link. That will cover most of what I want to do for now.
I'm not so sure a refund is for me, I bought on Amazon. Anyway, I will just wait it out until the full product out this year and see what is best for next year.
I will however go out of my way to leave reviews on all the major sellers websites of this product letting other folks know how low Intuit has gone selling such an unfinished product with no warnings.
Wouldn't surprise me if somebody sued them, doesn't seem to take much for that these days.
Not true. TT 2025 (updated 12/18) won't even let you input the data for the rent section AND worse yet it indicates that won't be ready to Feb. NOT ACCEPTABLE!
I agree. Totally unacceptable to offer an unfinished product. In past years all the updates where ready by mid December. Now they say not until January. That does not help for estimating tax liabilities before year end.
When is Turbo Tax going to be done with the social security section? I can't do any tax planning regarding further withdraws without entering amounts in the income sections they have not finished!. 13 DAYS UNTIL THE YEARS END!!!!!!.
@rsteiche I would not wait on anything in Turbotax for final year-end planning at this point, most stuff will be ready in January due to all the big bill changes.
try other online calculators to do your year-end estimations like this one
> due to all the big bill changes
I agree with your point about using something else for year-end planning, but I don't think we should excuse Intuit because of tax changes made in early July. Some of the sections that are still totally missing have no changes due to tax law changes in July. In late 2017, TT did an excellent job getting changes into the software *for the purposes of estimates, not filing* even though there was a much smaller lead time.
But most of all, they are promoting TT now (and did as early as early November) with the assurance "Up-to-date on the latest tax laws". No, it isn't, and even stuff that didn't change isn't ready.
I agree. It's 12-21-25 and you can't do any tax planning as several functions are still not updated such as charitable contributions, 1099R income and other 1099 income.
You would think they would have all the tax law information by now and be able to update their software. I have been using turbotax for decades. This maybe the last year!
Strange how their competitors are up and running their software to do year end tax planning. Of course they cover their tracks saying it’s for planning and updates may be coming. But TT could and should do the same thing. It’s very disappointing that the market leader is now a follower.
Couldn’t agree more!
Hi Baldie,
I totally concur and have normally used TT for the entire tax season. However this year I am trying to to take full advantage of $16k tax credits for a new EV and battery storage system, which will expire at the end of the year. I'm retired and don't generate enough income to write it off, so I'm trying to determine if it makes sense to create income by withdrawing more than my RMD from my IRA, - whether to do it via cash withdrawal or converting some of the IRA to a Roth IRA, or just forget the $16l 30% tax credit.
I know I'm in over my head and have been trying to enlist a local accounting firm that a friend and my broker both recommended for a good month. I've left word for the CPA my friend uses 3 times and another my broker at Schwab recommended twice and they haven't even had the decency to return my calls. Pretty standard treatment for service folk here on Cape Cod where there is way too much money - but CPA's? I'm pretty panicky at this point. (Yes I readily admit it is my fault for waiting 'til Thanksgiving to engage a firm.) Among other things I can't estimate MA returns bc the TT2025 MA form won't be available 'til January and ($contributions made in MD), which could well be a determining factor.
So I just spent 9 hours creating an estimated base return to which I can input various scenarios - difficult bc TT2025 doesn't allow input on some of the tax forms (my way of getting around their "no ready yet " warning). It should result in zero taxes, which it does 'til the end, then without source and for no apparent warning it says I owe 6k whereas TT2024 indicates to take full advantage of the write-off I need to make a huge additional IRA withdrawal . For me T2025 calculations are not to be trusted, so without help the only option is to recreate the return in TT2024.
So unless someone has recommendations, the only thing I can think of is to go back to recreating the return on a TT2024 form, try to incorporate the 2024-2025 changes, and see if I can get an online session with S&R Block.
Not the way I wanted to spend the holidays!
Tks for any input folks have. (grateful emoji)
Happy Holidays

you could start a fresh thread in the community here with the specifics of your situation and see if the experts here can advise on the tax math. there are a lot of threads about win 10 and the readiness of turbotax, so the actual tax issues get buried in here.
I don't know enough about the EV credit situation and what changed in the big bill but I would think that's an area where using 2024 software may be tricky.
If forms mode or dinktytown don't work for you then others have reported using FreeTaxUSA or switched to HR Block to do estimates but I can't vouch for either option.
if you end up having to switch unfortunately, you can request refund on TT from Intuit here

I have been using the software from above for the last few years and found it useful. It has the OBBBA also incorporated. This year I gave the author a small gift - he beats Intuit every year.
Agreed!
