Did you e-file already?
Have you already e-filed (or mailed in ) your 2023 return and need to amend it or are you still working on your original 2023 return?
Your filing status is determined by your responses to the questions in the "Personal Info" section.
No. I am working on the return now and cannot find anyway to change my filing status. It seems to have locked in married filing jointly, when I also use married filing separtely.
Still working on return
Your post is confusing. Are you trying to file a joint return with your spouse or are you trying to file married filing separately?
My spouse passed, but we always field separately and his family is doing his retrun. Byt Turbo Tax wont takle me to place to change filing status back to married filing separately.
Trying to file as married but filing separately. turbo Tax is stuck on married filing jointly, which is wrong.
You need to go back to My Info. Click your name... go through the screens. When it asks if you were married in 2023, say YES. Next question will be do you want to file together with your spouse----say NO. Then it will ask you for some information about your spouse---their name, SSN, etc. which each of you has to enter even if you are filing separately. If you are in a community property state it is much trickier.
When you file married filing separately there are strict rules----each of you has to file the same way---either you both use standard deduction or you both use itemized deductions. It cannot be one of each.
If you were legally married at the end of 2023 your filing choices are married filing jointly or married filing separately.
Married Filing Jointly is usually better, even if one spouse had little or no income. When you file a joint return, you and your spouse will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $27,700 (+$1500 for each spouse 65 or older) You are eligible for more credits including education credits, earned income credit, child and dependent care credit, and a larger income limit to receive the child tax credit.
If you choose to file married filing separately, both spouses have to file the same way—either you both itemize or you both use standard deduction. Your tax rate will be higher than on a joint return.
Some of the special rules for filing separately include: you cannot get earned income credit, education credits, adoption credits, or deductions for student loan interest. A higher percent of your Social Security benefits may be taxable. Your limit for SALT (state and local taxes and sales tax) will be only $5000 per spouse. In many cases you will not be able to take the child and dependent care credit. The amount you can contribute to a retirement account will be affected. If you live in a community property state, you will be required to provide additional information regarding your spouse’s income. ( Community property states: AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI)
If you are using online TurboTax to prepare your returns, you will need to prepare two separate returns and pay twice since with online, you get one return per fee.

He passed away n 2023. I dont have his tax info. His son will file his final return, not me.
My issue is that can never get back to the screen where I am asked for my filing status. I have filed separately for years and Turbo Tax changed my status to filing jointly when I answered that my spouse passed away in 2023. That does not change how I want to file, but I can't find anyway to revert my filing status to married but filing separately. How do I do that?

To change your filing status click on Personal Info>>Then when you get to the summary screen click edit next to your filing status. If the summary screen does not appear, then you can walk back through the questions in the personal info section starting with your name.
I have tried that numerous times and I can never get back to a screen that allows me to select my filing status.
Just to clarify, the program is suggesting Married Filing Jointly, not Head of Household or Surviving Spouse/Qualifying Widow?
Can you go back to the "Personal Info" section and delete the spouse's information and then re-enter?
Are you in the same TurboTax account as last year when you filed Married Filing Separately?
