I've noticed in Turbo Tax Premier 2024, when I go to...
Wages and Income/I'll choose what I work on/
then Selecting the Update button for either Interest or Dividends ....the resulting
window shows BOTH interest and dividends with the title
"Let’s finish pulling in your investment income".
And it's in a much less user friendly format than in previous years.
Each investment is displayed in a large box. I have a LOT of 1099's and having
the investments displayed in this format is confusing and also the fact that BOTH
interest and dividends are displayed in this window. I'm wondering WHY this
change was made, as the previous years list was specific to either interest or dividends
and was much more concise.

TurboTax Premier is a desktop product.
If I select Wages & Income a menu appears
Do you see something different?
If I select Wages and Income, I see a list of all 1099's from my previous year 2023 return.
Asking me if these all still apply. I leave all selected as they do still apply. I then select continue,
and am taken to 'How do you want to enter your income ?', then select 'I'll choose what I work on' .
Scroll down to 'Interest and Dividends' , then select the Update button on Interest 1099-INT
and am taken to "Let’s finish pulling in your investment income". And this window shows ALL
1099-DIV and 1099-INT, each in a box for that investment. Same behavior when I select
the Update button for 1099-DIV. The resulting window shows all 1099-DIV and 1099-INT.
I see no option as you mentioned for displaying only the 1099-INT.
Either Update button, 1099-INT or 1099-DIV, takes me to the "Let’s finish pulling in your investment income"
that shows ALL 1099-INT and 1099-DIV.
Thumbs down on the new UI. It is clunky, not user-friendly.
It's got the 1099-B's mixed in too. Agree it's very bad, apparently been designed and tested by a team who only have one 1099 to input. There is no longer a summary by INT or DIV to help reconcile totals. Lots of scrolling. And if you delete one of them, you have to scroll all the way back to the top to confirm Yes/No. If this is the start of Intuit pushing everyone to the online version I'll be going elsewhere after 20 years using this s/w.
I suspect I'll be using Forms mode instead of EasyStep as you can spin up new 1099s by double clicking in the Schedule B and the see the results by 1099 section more easily.
Very cumbersome and not user friendly at all! Turbo tax you can do better!
It's awful!!!!! I can't even figure out how to make it work. The old interface was simple and worked!
Thank You - I was going crazy with this "enhancement". I actually thought TurboTax was loaded badly and reinstalled the download with no change in the outcome. Like you I have 25+ dividends and interest entries and liked the OLD WAY where you could just select Brokerage statements to review or correct. Personally I think the new method sucks.
Hi TurboTax,
was this just awful programming on your part, or are you trying to push customers to the online version? As a 25+ year user, this is the first time I’m seriously considering switching to a different platform. Will this be fixed, or will the decline continue? Thanks.
It is very confusing, I don't want to import anything. I wanted to work with 1099-INT and 1099-DIV separately. Too many click throughs to enter the information and I am not really sure I have gotten it all entered.
Thank you for mentioning FORMS. I had one of my entries nicknamed wrong last year and it wasn't grouping properly. I was able to correct the name in FORMs.
Yes, I am totally shocked by the user interface change! It is no longer viable as a tool to enter and review Income information from any type of 1099, unless you only have one to enter!! What were they thinking???? Obviously NOT thinking!!! Well, anyway, this is a deal breaker for me, and I will seek other tools immediately. Perhaps that could go back to 'classic mode' or something? Probably too late for 2024. Even though I have already paid for the downloaded version, it would be worth it for me to not have to deal with this ridiculously designed new user interface! There was a clean and easy to view summary of income and capital gains with a summary total at the end. So, why did they change it??????
You are right, it is absolutely awful. I can't imagine who they beta tested this with. Certainly not experienced TT desktop users. I'm thrashing around trying to figure out how to get my 1099-Bs in.
For TT, in case you want the use case: I have ONE tax document from my largest investment company. They sent me a 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, and 1099-Bs. I want to put all those in this morning into TT. I want to just select the type of tax form and get right into entering it. Stop asking me to "put in the rest of my investment income" before I can put in the 1099-Bs. It's extremely inefficient and annoying. Yes, I have other 1099-INTs and other income to enter. But "choose what you work on" means CHOOSE WHAT YOU WORK ON. Not this schlock.
What I found in my Windows Home & Business program........
For 2024 Desktop. I don't like how to enter Interest, Dividends, Sales etc. Too many clicks and screens to click on and go through. There is no table on the screen (except in Forms) and you have to click though several screens to add more. And after I manually entered 3 interest it didn't ask if I wanted it to stop asking to import. Oh and Interest, Dividends and Sales are listed in the same list on the screen alphabetically. If I go to Interest I only want to see Interest!
You can switch to Forms Mode and enter them directly into Schedule B using the Interest Income Smart Worksheet. But then they won't show up in the Step-by-Step list.
Oh, and at least in my H&B program, you can't enter any bank info like EIN. The payer TIN and address isn't a required field for filing, so you don't need to enter that information. There is nowhere to enter that information in the Step-By-Step section of TurboTax. However, if you do prefer to include it you can do so by going to Forms and navigating to the 1099-INT.
So go to the bottom and click on +Add Investments
Then to Import enter the bank or financial institution in the search box
Then double click on the item below
OR to manually enter, don't enter the bank name and click Skip Import at the bottom
THEN....should be a screen with 5 boxes, Interest, Dividends, Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, Cryptocurrency and Other.
TRANSFERRED FROM 2023
If you transferred from last year you get to a list of all your 1099s. To enter the amount click on Review which takes you back to the beginning screen to import your tax info or go to the bottom and Skip Import. Then you get the screen with 5 boxes. Pick the kind of 1099 and Continue. Then that 1099 will show up.
I was shocked at how awful this is. I have fifteen separate entries on this page. Once a topic is named, you cannot rename it without deleting it and starting over. The page is sorted alphabetically, So everything has be named alphabetically -- or you really have a mess. You cannot look at the page and tell what you have entered without clicking something. The only way to find out for sure what's in there is to go to the forms and look at each individual 1099. There is way too much scrolling up and down, and way too much free (blank) space. Whoever designed it must have only had one entry to make. Absolutely confusing as hell, and this is from a very experienced tax preparer. This one thing has changed what was a decent program into something that really sucks.
