I was also on the phone with a nice customer service person for about an hour.  Although we tried several things, it still wasn't resolved and we were not able to get the remote control software to work for her to check herself.  I did notice, however, that one of the errors mentioned Netgear.  I had my PC connected by hardwire through a switch, and when I disconnected and went to wireless the download and registration worked fine.  Don't know if there was additional security in the switch itself, but in any event it worked.  Hope this helps if you're plugged in via wire.

Just updating.

 

Since TT now is not apparently transmitting return to IRS despite receipt as appears return is in permanent hold (nearly a week) for acceptance/rejection (no issues, all forms available etc) having to look elsewhere to file or just print and take to the USPS. 

 

In checking other sw, found that Taxact.com sw had same activation problem for some wrt desktop users.  But they among other suggestions (if logged in as admin, no vpn or antivirus or firewall blocking etc) in a long detailed list step by step approach did indicate that going to properties and unclicking the read only button might work.  So perhaps this is the part I did that actually enabled activation of the desktop TT version...with of course no mention anywhere by TT of it as a possible solution.

 

However, also noticed taxact, taxslayer, hrblock all being sued for privacy violations providing w/o permission information from people's returns (looks like possibly only from those using online versions) to meta, google, etc.

 

Of course TT is being sued for data breach (for which they took months to notify people).

This error is still an issue and Tech Support has not been given a lot of direction beyond the usual steps with clearing cache, etc..  Thought about the antivirus being an issue and will try that.  Thanks.

Hopefully the antivirus sw and/or vpn and/or firewall being turned off might help but...it didn't for me not to mention it is a security issue and please be sure to scan your computer afterwards and disinfect.  Had already been logged in as administrator and user with full privileges and still was in the horrible endless activation login loop.  Sorry to hear TT still hasn't fixed this problem but I am not at all surprised.

 

What I had to do as previously posted was go to properties for the program and enable all boxes including system and uncheck read only which fixed the problem.  If you haven't seen my previous post, you might want to take a look.

 

Afterwards when checking out an alternative tax sw (taxact) for next year recommended by others, I saw they had a step by step process for just this problem and one of the final steps was in fact going to properties and unchecking the read only box so perhaps that is what did it for me.

The only other non obvious suggestion I have is based on another's post that you may have missed due to the significant number of people posting re this problem.  In another posters case, he/she had the ability to directly connect the computer to the internet and bypass the modem/router (I am presuming the computer had its own modem with a different protocol).  That seemed to do it for that poster probably because of some sort of embedded security in the modem/router.   Using permissions to change the properties and enable system in addition to administrator, user, etc may or may not address this issue depending upon how your computer is set up.

I'm still having issue signing in. I ended up opening it in  incognito tab. No issue there.

Shame on Turbo Tax for making it so difficult to file taxes. I considered switching to another program but transferring my info seems like a pain.

Sorry to hear that you are having so many problems, especially since TT has known about this issue since late Nov/early Dec and done nothing to address it.

 

Next year I am definitely trying a different tax sw suggested by others after having used TT for many years and having so many problems the past few years, it just is not worth it.  Not just log in and activation problems but errors in forms, problems getting TT to transmit to IRS, etc. 

 

Had to finally file by paper after no acceptance through TT efiling for extended period of time.  Just got my tax refund a 3 days ago and IMO adding further insults yesterday TT sent me a message saying my return transmittal to IRS was still pending, so IMO a good thing I filed by USPS.

 

Also, really irritating but TT form incorrectly assessed an underpayment penalty for estimated taxes which I knew was incorrect but TT would not allow the amount to be overruled.  Since it was for a small amount and given all the problems already experienced with TT, I just gave up because like you I could not face having to do my taxes a second time this year with a new program after all the time wasted with TT.  At least fortunately the IRS corrected TT error and my refund was higher by that amount.
