"Unfortunately, the disaster distributions area wasn't ready in time for us to include it in this release.

Please revisit this area later."

This message was encountered yesterday April 22nd, in Turbotax freefile. This is a change from the previous day, so perhaps more tweaking is being done to this processing for form 8915-E.  Hope so.

This same error message is happening again in 2022 when trying to file 2021 taxes and spread the distribution over three years.  When will TT incorporate the updated instructions for the 2021 tax filers?  The deadline to file free using TT is coming very soon, and it doesn't seem equitable that TT would close the option to file free before the software was even complete?

You can monitor the status of the forms needed for your return in the below TurboTax help article. If the form becomes available sooner than the currently published date, the article will be updated to reflect the new availability date.

Which file free deadline are you referring to? TurboTax Free Edition is available all year and TurboTax Basic Live can be filed free until March 31, 2022.

I received a message that the TT freefile was going to be available only until Feb 28th.

If you are waiting on the form 8915-F then you cannot use the TT free version at all.  You will need to upgrade to the Deluxe version when that form is ready.

If you qualify you can use one of the  8  IRS FREE FILE options (AGI has to be  $73K or less)...  https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

Thanks, @MichelleLO, but that webpage doesn't list the 8915-E for 2020 distributions.  It only lists the 8915 B-D forms for 2017-2019 and gives available dates for those.

The IRS Form 8915-E was only used for tax year 2020, it is not used for any other tax year.

There was the option to spread distributions taken in 2020 out over three years for tax purposes and not have to pay the early withdrawal penalty.  I need the form for that.

When the Form 8915-F becomes available there will be questions asked in the Retirement income section of the program dealing with the distribution made in 2020.  If you completed a Form 8915-E in 2020 and transferred your 2020 tax data to the 2021 tax return, the information needed should be automatically filled in.  But even if it is not you can enter any of the required information using the 2020 Form 8915-E that was included in your 2020 tax return.

The Form 8915-F, Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Retirements is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 03/31/2022 (subject to change)

I have been waiting for this update and it still has not come through on my TT software (been updating my software daily).  Could someone please tell me when to expect this update? This is for my 2021 taxes.

Great news! The IRS created new Form 8915-F to replace Form 8915-E.  This form will be used for anyone who chose to take a distribution from their retirement and spread the taxable amount over three years (considered a disaster distribution).

It was recently (approximately 10 days) taken out of draft and finalized.  TurboTax has an available date of March 31, 2022.  Continue to check the availability date by using the link provided.

When entering your 1099-R in TurboTax CD/Download, you’ll be asked Was this withdraw due to Covid-19? On the next screen, it should ask you Did you test positive for the coronavirus in 2020? However, some users are reporting they aren’t being asked that second question.
