With me, I made it all the way until I got to entering my 14 digit number.  After 3 weeks, I FINALLY got my 5071c letter.  I went back in to complete my verification and the 14 digit screen no longer comes up, instead I get this:  We are not able to provide assistance to you via the identity verification tool.  I tried calling that 1-800 number but it keeps telling me they have high volume calls and cannot take my call, then hangs up.  I call 5-6 times a day for the past week and a half, same message. I had to make an appointment with a local IRS agent who is an hour and 45 minutes away!!  this is totally ridiculous.

So, I electronically filed January 29, 2024. I finally received the letter March 20, 2024. I could not verify online so I had to call in. I called right at 7AM on March 21, 2024. Only had to wait 18 minutes on hold. Answered the questions asked and was told the whole up to 9 weeks schpeal and the "where's my refund" site is updated every day. Still shows the old notice of having to verify. We'll see how long this step takes. I'm confident I'll have to call the second number I was given on the 21st to check the status. At this rate, I'll be filing this years taxes before I see a refund.

I received a letter on March 18th and I filed on Jan 25th was accepted on 29th. It's been like a week since I verified over the phone but I still see online verify thing on the accoun. Should I verify it online too then or should I wait as I verified over the phone. I waited too long already for this money and I am seriousky out of patience at this point.

Saying what is happening to your return at the IRS would be speculation. All you can do now is, wait. At least you know that the IRS has your filing. It does not matter who sent your form to them. That is the sole destination for federal tax returns. No one has discovered a way to make any tax agency speed up working on or sending out refunds. No one ever will because they are an overwhelmed, over worked, under funded and under staffed government bureaucracy. Eventually you will get the pay off of your no interest loan to the government. 21 days is just an educated/informed guess/goal of the IRS which should not be relied on.

  Have you thought of paying just enough by estimates or withholding to avoid a penalty and let the government wait for your check?

how long did it take for you status to change? Because I verified it on March 18th and it still shows verify identity thing for me. I also verified over the phone should I verify it online too or just wait?

You are verifying your identity with the IRS.  Once your return has been accepted by the IRS, TurboTax is not informed of the status of your return.  However, the time varies for identity verification depending on the circumstances of each case.  Please make all future inquiries to the IRS about the status of your return.  You can also check Where is My Refund
