How to account for 1099 MISC from AmeriCorps Education Award

Actually, you do have to report income under $600.  You won't get a 1099 form for it, but it is your responsibility to report any income.

How to account for 1099 MISC from AmeriCorps Education Award

I earned my Segal (Americorps) Education award while living and working in Utah.  The address on my 1099-misc is my Utah Address.  However, I moved to California and used the grant to pay tuition to UCLA.  I am filing returns in both states.  Which state do I report this grant?

Since you earned it in Utah, it would be Utah income.

How to account for 1099 MISC from AmeriCorps Education Award

Hi there,

Is the process for putting in the Ed Award still following the directions from the 2019 tax year?

Should I put my 1099 MISC information under the "Income from Form 1099-MISC" section of "Wages & Income" or should I follow the directions to file it under "Less Common Income" -> "Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C"?

Like others stated, I know it is not self employment income and don't want to overpay.

Thanks so much!

Since the income reported on your Form 1099-MISC is not directly for services performed but it is a bonus award, you can use the following steps to report it as other income and not self-employment income.

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-MISC” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-MISC"

  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-MISC” link

  • Enter the information from your 1099-MISC, then click Continue

  • Enter a description for the income, then click Continue

  • Select None of these apply, then click Continue

  • Select No, it did not involve work like my main job, then click Continue

  • Select I got it in 2018, then click Continue

  • Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then click Continue

  • This will place the income on line 21 of Schedule 1 under Other Income

How to account for 1099 MISC from AmeriCorps Education Award

Even when I follow these instructions, turbotax tells me I still need to answer questions about the supposed business I have. The free file is supposed to write it in line 8 of schedule 1, but still making me answer questions like it still from self-employment. For example, asking me to write my "business code." Has anyone figured out how to fix this? Everything I try, I still get the same outcome of having to answer self-employment questions!

Please help!

This is handled as other income and not business income.

  1. Go to federal>income and expenses>all income>>show more
  2. Other common income> Start
  3. Form 1099-MISC,>start
  4. After entering the 1099, it will ask the reason for it, you can say an Americorp Award.
  5. Does one of these uncommon situations apply say none
  6. Did the XX involve work that's like your main job? Say no
  7. How often did you get income for h? You can say you got it in 2020.
  8. Next screen asks, Did the xx involve an intent to earn money? say no
  9. If you answer correctly in these precise steps, you will not be required to fill out a Schedule C.
  10. If the program still indicates you need to fill out a Schedule C, you will need to go to tax tools>tools>delete a form>delete all forms and worksheets relating to schedule C
