The IRS have misread the check I wrote

I recently did my taxes, and owed $903. I mailed my return with a check made out for $903. The IRS have processed the check in the sum of $503, and it has posted at my bank as $503.

I have talked to my bank, and the IRS, both sort of blame each other. At  this time neither can see a scanned copy of the check yet, in fact the IRS do not provide the bank or the tax payer (me) a scanned copy of the check on their website, but I'm sure I filled out the check correctly. I understand my "9" could be misread as a "5", but I wrote out as required "Nine Hundred and Three - 00/100", plus there were other examples of the number "5" on the check to compare. Maybe this is scanned by a reader and not a human that would see the numbers differently?

My question is, whose responsibility is this to correct the issue, and I know it it ultimately me, but can the IRS correct the mistake, or my bank, or will I have to file an Amended return for the $400 shortfall, and amend my records  accordingly?

The person I talked to at the IRS said they could see a copy of my checks, but as of yet it is not showing in their system. Perhaps I should just wait and see how this plays out?

You need to wait and actually see a copy of the check you wrote to the IRS.  The check will be sent to your bank and scanned.

I would wait.  You would not have to file an amended return in any case, just go to www.irs.gov/payments and make an additional $400 payment to your account.  I would wait to see what happens.  You should not be charged any late fees or penalties as long as the IRS receives the full amount by April 15 (either by correcting the check or you making an extra payment).

I'm hoping so, but all scanned copies of previous checks written to the IRS have not been provided to the bank. Or at least not accessible to me.
