Hi so i was screensharing while doing my taxes with one of the representatives and during this process my social showed up on the screen, they said that all personal information is blocked however another associate said they can see all your stuff. So what do i do i feel a bit uncomfortable that the representative has seen that or potintially saw that. Obviously they arent supposed to do anything with it but is there any preventative measures i can do to make sure.

There are two different tools that can be used between an agent and customer -

  1. SmartLook allows an agent to see your TurboTax window and nothing else. All Personal Identifying Information is blocked out.  If you Edit a field that has Identifying Information while sharing there is a chance they will see the information when you click the edit button, otherwise it remains blocked.
  2. Glance will allow an agent to see your whole desktop and anything you have open on your computer. No Personal Identifying Information is blocked.

Hi thanks for the response! i am not sure which one they were using, is there a way to figure out which one they were using?

When they were screensharing it had a blue box around the intuit screen window, and they could only move the screen not click anything so i am not sure if that helps  identify which one they were using or not

That sounds like they were using Smartlook.

But for peace of mind there are a lot of tools that you can use to prevent identity theft and monitor activity that involves your social security number.

Here is the IRS guide on identity theft for individuals.  The IRS has tools to prevent people from using your social security number for anything that you didn't authorize.

You can also monitor your credit.  Your bank will be able to help with that.  You can set up a remote monitor that notifies you anytime something happens and you will be able to put a stop to it quickly if it is something that you didn't authorize.

it makes sense to feel uneasy seeing your social during screen sharing is stressful. Reps aren't allowed to use that info, but for peace of mind you can monitor your credit or setup alerts just in case.

I had a similar moment while setting up my gaming room and sorting my hill climb racing stuff. I was comparing the best car in hill climb racing and shared the wrong window by accident. Nothing happened, but it reminded me to always double check before sharing my screen.
