OVERRIDE is greyed out in Edit and CANNOT enter data in Line 8 of Schedule 1

Regarding the New Exclusion of $10,200 of Unemployment Compensation OVERRIDE does not work

I cannot enter  "UCE" on the dotted line next to line 8, nor input the $10,200 value on line 8.

Per IRS instructions below

https://www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/forms-publications/new-exclusion-of-up-to-10200-of-unemploym...

  1. I select OPEN FORM
  2. I select from the side bar Schedule 1
  3. Form appears and I cursor over to the dotted line on Line 8.
  4. I Left click the area to edit, high lited boxes appear, right click and am unable to enter any data
  5. I Double click Schedule 1 on the side bar and an alternate Schedule 1 Form is displayed
  6. I cursor to EDIT on top tool bar and Drop Down appears
  7. Drop down choices are ALL greyed out INCLUDING OVERRIDE except "Copy" and "Emogi & Symbols"
  8. I need to edit the fields so I can complete my return

I am using Turbo Tax Deluxe 2020 Disc version on my Mac

The $10,200 unemployment retroactive to 2020 was just signed into law. Now the IRS is responsible for writing regulations and rules for claiming it.

Software changes do not happen overnight - it takes time to test, package as an update and fit into the existing update schedule. Probably a few weeks.

The IRS has yet to offer guidance for e-file providers. What the IRS published is for hand filled paper returns. Electronic returns are totally different and require IRS issued e-file specifications that both the e-file providers system and the IRS system are programed for so they can talk to each other. That takes a lot of development by the IRS to supply the e-file specifications for the change. e-file does not send forms it sends encrypted data.

There are still several issues that Congress did not address, for example the EIC credit depends on income and AGI, the IRA contribution limit depends on AGI. Other tax and credits depend on AGI. With the unemployment exclusion from income how are those calculated - before or after the exclusion? The IRS must issue regulations and form changes to deal with that.

TurboTax can e-mail you when the change is ready.

Correct - you cannot override it.   The IRS has not provide guidance for e-file providers - only for paper filers that fill out the forms by hand.  e-file totally different.

as of now the IRS prefers that taxpayers not file if the have UC, EIC or CTC or any other item that can change if AGI changes such as medical expenses, the excess Premium Tax Credit for those that have Marketplace insurance, the Qualified Business Income, Alternative minimum tax and probably other items.   even taxpayers filing paper returns may have to file amended returns depending on what effect the UC exclusion has on other items on their returns and then there are the paper returns with EIC and/or CTC.

Saw a message that regarding the $10,200 Unemployment tax break that the IRS plans to automatically process the refunds so I completed my 2020 tax return, but I ran into a problem with Turbo Tax and would like to know  how this would be resolved.

  1. I processed my 2020 return via Turbo Tax and e-filed both returns.
  2. Both Federal and State returns were scheduled to be paid via my checking account.
  3. For the State TT required a $25 processing fee.
  4.  Due to an IRS hiccup with last years AGI both the Federal and State returns were rejected and returns needed to be filed by mail.
  5. I wrote out a hand written check for the Federal return and processed a FTB Web Pay for the State return.
  6. Since both returns are now being filed by mail, how do I get refunded the $25 e-file fee for the State since my credit card has already been charged?
  7. Also, since the $25 e-file fee was charged, will TT still process the amount due to the State or did the process cease since the returns were rejected?

A reject means it was not filed at all.
