Needs review 1099 DIV

I have a 1099DIV from Vanguard that has an amount listed only in box 12- tax exempt interest. Turbo tax keeps sending it to review stating that box 1a must have an amount greater than or equal to box 12. There is no amount in 1a because it's tax free.  How do I overcome this error message?

Don't include the form. You have no dividends to report.

Here's the general procedure for viewing a list of all the forms in your return and deleting unwanted forms, schedules, and worksheets in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and open your return by selecting Continue or Pick up where you left off
  2. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form

Well, if you are retired, or live in an income-taxing state I disagree with @leeloo somewhat to a lot.

1)  IF you are retired, the $$ in box 12 are critical in determining your MAGI for determining how much of your SS is about to be taxed...and in determining if your Medicare Premiums (Parts B&D) are subject to extra premiums the next year.

2) If you live in an income-taxing state, the $$ in box 12 are usually required to be mostly-to-all added to your state's income and are usually considered taxable in your state.

___________

IF you imported that 1099-DIV form, try deleting it entirely and entering it manually using the 1099-DIV form that Vanguard provides on their website....usually within a consolidated 1099-B PDF file.  That particular error shouldn't happen that way, but perhaps there is something else that imported that is causing the problem.

Also, don't put zero's in any boxes.....IF there is not a valid positive value in a box, leave it empty/blank.

@Maradsous    I just saw that error for the first 1099-DIV that I entered into the software.

I clicked my cursor in box 1a, and then clicked in another box and the non-"error" cleared out.

Thank and you are correct and I need that DIV info for my state taxes and because I'm retired and it effects my MAGI. I have twice deleted the offending 1099DIV and inputted the info by hand both time with the same error message, that box 1a should be greater or equal. Clicking my cursor on the boxes does not remove the error. I note that the worksheet displays 1a as blank but just below the spot for ordinary dividends is a line for US gov't interest which is filled with the amount from box 12. I even tried filling in the amount on box 1a only to see my tax rise by exactly that amount. Any idea what's going on?

OK, I found my problem and I'm afraid I caused it myself.  I inadvertently checked that the money in was partly US Gov't interest when none of it was that was what triggered the error message.  I just went back and unchecked the USG interest line and it cleared the error.  Sorry for the bother and Thanks all for the help!!
