I'm trying to amend my 2017 returns. On my online account, it says to download my .tax file but that I'll need TurboTax Desktop 2017 in order to do this. I already have the .tax file on my pc but not the software. I don't know what happened to the software. I must have had it in order to download my .tax file but I can't find it in my downloads on turbotax.com.
I also can't find any purchase history on my turbotax account, just the section that shows your tax returns and documents with the option to download my 2017 .tax file in order to amend it. How do I find my software download?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you use the online program to complete the 2017 return then log back in, scroll down and open the prior year returns. Look at the list on the right hand side, the last thing on the list is the downloading of the tax file. The first thing on that list is the option to amend, click on that and choose to download the amendment program.
I tried doing that but the download won't open. I click the one for Windows and nothing happens except that the page blinks for a second....
Also, I don't think that I used the online program because I already have the .tax file.
Then did you use the downloaded version ? Did you uninstall it already ? If so reinstall it.

You could have downloaded the .tax2017 file from online without needing the Desktop program installed. Do you also have the pdf file? Maybe you downloaded the .tax file when you were done instead of the pdf?
But it says that you can't download the .tax file without the desktop software so I must have had it to download it, right? I don't have the PDF and I can't find the software's .exe file so it must be gone from my computer. I can't find a PDF file but I did print my return and have it.
I can't find anywhere that shows I purchased turbotax at all in any form on turbotax's site nor in my emails and credit card statements. I must have purchased it in order to file my taxes but I can't find any record of it.
UPDATE: I have found the PDF file. So, I have the .tax file and the PDF file.
It probably says you need the Desktop software to OPEN a .tax file. But you can download the .tax file without having the software installed. You can download it first before you install the program to amend or to switch and finish in the desktop program

VolvoGirl, you are correct. I misread it. It says:
How to amend your 2017 return
Download your .tax file
(You'll need to purchase TurboTax Deluxe online or higher editions in order to download your .tax file. Learn more)
So, now I am still confused. Why is it saying that I need to purchase the online version to download it? I either filed using the online or the desktop version because I did file my taxes via TurboTax using the Home & Business or Self Employed software. I've been using it since 2006 and I definitely did not use anything else to file my 2017 taxes. I have the 2017 .tax file and PDF so I must have paid to use TurboTax to file. This is really confusing because I can't find any receipt for using it in 2017 anywhere(yet).
Critter-3, I will have to try to contact them hopefully tomorrow. Thank you.
NOTHING needs to be purchased ... the amendment program is free to download ... if you see this screen then all you have to do is click on your OS ...
