You will still have to print and mail the tax return even after the other party amended their return. The IRS database still has the Social Security number of you wife in their database as being on a filed tax return.
Hey Donin, so I’ve had the option to Refile on TurboTax up until now. I don’t see why I don’t have the option to do this anymore? Why would I physically have to mail in the copy if my mother in laws account has been amended and confirmed by the IRS that my wife’s SSN is no longer on her 2023 taxes? She received a letter saying this yesterday morning.
The amended return does not change the IRS database which has the Social Security numbers from tax e-filed tax returns. If you attempted to e-file your tax return again it would be still be rejected by the IRS.
Additionally, if this is a 2023 tax return it has to be printed and mailed since TurboTax no longer will e-file a 2023 return.
The e-file database does not "reset" with an amendment, as DoninGA points out.
However, the IRS has created a new way to potentially allow for e-filing this year.
Your wife can apply for an Identity Protection PIN "IP PIN" and when this is entered in TurboTax, the return may electronically file. If it rejects after this step, you will need to print the return and mail this year.
Keep in mind that once she has received an IP PIN, she will be required to retrieve a new pin annually to be able to electronically file a federal tax return.
