Missing 2021 Form 1116

Just discovered that TT does not support e-filing with foreign tax credit carried forward from previous years. So now I have to file on paper, and wait months for my refund. What is really annoying is that I used TT last year, so they knew that I had foreign tax credits from last year, but no-one thought to tell me there was no point in waiting for e-filing for form 1116 to become available.

Missing 2021 Form 1116

Strange - still not available for me (TT Premier on MacOS). Says I'm "all up to date!" but still missing 1116. Very annoying to now not have any outlook on when I'll be able to file my taxes.

An additional problem is that even the paper version of Schedule B to Form 1116, which is required if you are carrying forward unused foreign tax credit from previous years, will not be available from TT until March 31st.

Missing 2021 Form 1116

According to the schedule Form 1116 is now available (3/3/22), but there was no form update today and I still have this attached message. Is or is not the form available?

Missing 2021 Form 1116

I have managed to add two copies of Form 1116 to the pdf of my return (one for passive, one for general income), but I don't know whether to submit it or not, because I think I need also to include Schedule B to Form 1116 detailing the tax credits being carried forward, and that's not available until March 31st (and of course, not supported for electronic filing).

Missing 2021 Form 1116

I have been following this conversation, but stopped participating as I had nothing to add and was waiting for the update.  I've learned a lot from reading many of the posts and now that  the 1116 update is partially working, I have been experimenting to see if I can somehow get Turbo Tax to run without errors. I found a way to bypass form 1116 but I have a question that I hope a tax expert can answer.

I have foreign tax of $673.  All information was imported from my investment company.  If I take the credit, it increases my refund by $161 and the remainder is carried over to next year.  I have no carryover from previous years, but smart check still gives me the error regarding carryover.  If I go into the download from my investment company and manually change the foreign tax paid to $600 (maximum for mfj to avoid form 1116 requirement), the refund goes up an additional $259 to $420 (seems counterintuitive, but that's what happened).  Turbo Tax then asks me if I want to agree to not using any carryovers to which I answer yes. Then I run smart check and there are no errors.  Seems odd that there is such a difference and that now I can proceed with filing.   I always figured if you under reported, the IRS wouldn't care; however, in this case I would be under-reporting and getting a bigger refund. The question is:  Is it okay to do this?  It's not worth it if the IRS decides to flag it and audit me because the number doesn't match the Investment firm number.  I have never intentionally cheated and I have never been audited and I want to keep it that way.  Also, why can't Turbo Tax give  the same option to forgo any carryovers when I use the correct number as imported?  This would solve a lot of headaches.  I can certainly understand why someone with a much larger foreign tax may not want to forgo the carryover; however, when the number is low, why not leave it up to the individual taxpayer and give us the option?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Missing 2021 Form 1116

After trying multiple times I was finally able to log in.  Form 1116 still not available.

For the record I've been using Turbox Tax for years w/o any issues, but this year has certainly been bumpy.  Not sure what going with Turbo Tax, but it makes me want to switch.

Missing 2021 Form 1116

Me too. Just spoke to a TurboTax expert who confirmed that to carry forward a foreign tax credit from a previous year, I cannot e-file and have to file on paper. More seriously, TurboTax is telling me to submit my paper return even though Schedule B for form 1116 is not available. The tax specialist confirmed that without Schedule B of Form 1116, the return would be rejected, and yet Turbo Tax is telling me to submit the return. This is a major defect in the software.

Missing 2021 Form 1116

At the forms availability website it says that Form 1116 is "unsupported" for e-file. Does this mean we can't e-file if we need Form 1116?

On 3/3/22, I went to my file and from 1116 was there, but now the message is Form 1116, Schedule B is needed.  I talked with a help line person for 25 minutes, she had to keep going for information elsewhere.  It was like she had no clue.  The message online was that I could only file by mail, but there would be modifications to the system in the future.  I wanted to know when that would be, next week, next month, or for some future year.  There was really no clear answer.  She kept talking something about April 1st, but no clear explanation.

I think you can e-file Form 1116 provided you have nothing in line 10.

The message is referring to Form 1116 Schedule B, Foreign Tax Carryover Reconciliation Schedule and should not say "Unsupported" it should have read "Not yet Available.  The estimated availability date for the Form 1116 Schedule B is 03/31/2022.  The form can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

If you need to include the Form 1116 Schedule B, Foreign Tax Carryover Reconciliation Schedule with your tax return then it will have to be printed and mailed since the Schedule B cannot be e-filed.

And even for paper filing, this form won't be available until March 31st...
