contact Medicare. this is not an income tax question.

Are you referring to Social Security benefits reported  on a SSA-1099?

Medicare premiums paid from the SS benefits are reported as an itemized medical expense on Schedule A.

The Medicare premiums are not deducted from the benefits reported on the SSA-1099 in box 5.

On your tax return you report the SS benefits received from box 5 of the SSA-1099.

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

  • Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
  • Single or Head of Household - $25,000
  • Married Filing Separately - 0

Or are you referring to something else entirely?

The standard Medicare Part B premiums in 2023 was $164.90, which is $1978 for the year. Your spouse paid the standard premium but yours was $600 less.

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may be possible you paid lower premiums because premiums can be higher or lower than the basic premium for enrollees who receive Part B benefits through the Medicare Advantage program. In that program, private insurers assume the responsibility for, and the financial risk of, providing Medicare benefits.

If this isn't the reason, check your 1099 SSA form and your own entry into Turbo Tax to see if there is a typo that may have been mistakenly entered.
