Tax Year Prior to 2020: Made a mistake on taxes

I filed single instead of head of house to claim my son how do I fix that if I already filed

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Made a mistake on taxes

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until mid-March.

Its telling me i need to file a 8862 or 164 form for earned income tax

Form 8862 is used to claim Earned Income Credit after the IRS disallowed it in the past.

You may get that message if you have been audited for Earned Income Credit, or if you had a change in your tax return that changed the amount of your Earned Income Credit.

Here is how to add Form 8862 to your tax return.

Sign in to your account and open your return.

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Deductions and Credits toward the top left.
  3. Scroll down/ expand the list and look for You and Your Family.
  4. Find Earned Income Credit and click on Start or Update to the right.
  5. On the screen titled, Looks like the Earned Income Credit may put more money in your pocket, click Continue.
  6. Continue until you get to the question Do any of these uncommon situations apply?
  7. Check the box that says, I/we got a letter/notice from the IRS telling me/us to fill out an 8862 form to claim the Earned Income Credit.
  8. Select Continue and then Done.
  9. On the Since you got an IRS notice, we need to check on a few things screen, select  No, none of these apply and I need to fill out the 8862 form.
  10. Select Continue.
  11. Answer the remaining questions.

It depends. have you already submitted your return? If yes, then you cannot do anything to your return once you submit them. You will need to wait to see if your return was rejected or accepted. If it is rejected, you are able to login to your return to fix what you missed and refile the return.

If your return is accepted, then you will need to file an amended return. You should not try to amend your return until the original return has been fully processed and you have received your refund, or your payment has cleared.

Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original return and replace them; they are processed as two separate returns.

Amended returns can be e-filed or it can be printed and filed by mail. It can take the IRS up to 12 weeks or longer to process them. If you are due a larger refund than on your original return, your amended return should only show the difference and you will receive a separate check for it. If you owe money on your amended return, it will show only the new amount owed, you will have to mail a check with the return.

The option to amend a 2021 tax return will become available later in the tax season.

Please visit How to amend (change or correct) a return you've already filed for more information on how to amend your tax return once the option is available.

However, if you have not submitted your return or if your return is rejected, then please follow the steps below to add additional W-2s.

  1. Click on Tax Home on the Left Side Menu.
  2. Click on Income & Expenses in the middle of the screen.
  3. Click on Work on Other Income.
  4. Scroll Down and you will see a Section for Wages & Salaries. Expand that and Click on Start/Revisit. Then you will see the W-2s you have already entered and there would be an option for "Add a W-2" for you and your spouse. Please refer to the image below for further reference.

I assume that you already filed your Hawaii state taxes.  If so, to make any corrections you will need to file an amended return for Hawaii.    If you have already filed your taxes, you need to wait until your return is processed before you file an amended return.

If you have not filed your Hawaii state return, you can go ahead and make the correction in TurboTax and then e-file.

If you filed you return and it was accepted, you will need to file an amendment to add another W-2 form.

It is best to wait until your original tax return is processed before you amend your tax return. That means waiting until after you receive your refund, or at least three weeks if you owe.

Because today is the tax filing deadline, you may want to start your amendment now to see if it causes you to have a balance due, or an additional refund. Any balance due not paid as of today is considered late and will be subject to penalty and interest until paid.

If you used TurboTax Online:

  1. Log in to your account and select 2021, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  2. Answer the first few questions, then select your reason for amending.
  3. Add or edit the information you need to change.
  4. Continue until you have answered all of the questions, including the explanation for the amendment. Do not submit your amendment until your original return is processed.

If you used our CD/download product:

  1. Sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.”
  2. Answer the first few questions, then select your reason for amending.
  3. Add or edit the information you need to change.
  4. Continue until you have answered all of the questions, including the explanation for the amendment. Do not submit your amendment until your original return is processed.
