Able to install it but it won't run. Starts to open, then quits. So do TT 2019 and 2018.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for Mac minimum system requirements for TurboTax software by tax year - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/system-requirements/help/minimum-system-requirements-for-turbotax-...

Operating System

  • 2020: macOS Mojave 10.14 or later
  • 2019: macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later
  • 2018: macOS X v.10.12 or later (64-bit required)

Is turbo tax home and business 2020 compatible with MAC OS Big Sur 11.1?

Thanks, Mike. Most of us who are asking about this issue have consulted those minimum requirements. The fact remains, TT does not run on Big Sur. Some have pointed out that when TT says "2020: macOS Mojave 10.14 or later," they mean any version of the Mojave OS starting with 10.14. That does not necessarily mean TT will work on Catalina or Big Sur. Many of us have found that TT does NOT work on Big Sur. It installs, but it does not open.

if you get the message "TurboTax cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software" then that is caused by the Apple "Gatekeeper" introduced with OS X 10.15 (Catalina).

That has nothing to do with TurboTax and will happen for any application not purchased from the Apple Store.

See this Apple article on this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491

And this TurboTax help article: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/troubleshooting/help/turbotax-for-mac-won-t-open-when-installed/00...

For older Mac systems when TurboTax will not open.
See:

Be sure that System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General -> Allow apps downloaded from App Store and identified developers is checked.

Go to the Applications folder and select the TurboTax application in the Finder and right click with the mouse (or control click) ans select the top "open". That should force the first open. After that it should open normally.

Thanks for your reply.

I am not getting the message "TurboTax cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software." I am not getting any message. Neither are most of the other TT users who are posting this issue. It behaves just like TT always does, but instead of opening, it looks like it is opening for a fraction of a second, and then it quits completely.

That can indicate a crash so there should be a crash report.

https://support.apple.com/guide/console/reports-cnsl664be99a/mac

Sometimes simply restarting the Mac will solve it.   Other times it could be due to a corrupted file.

Corruption could have occurred in the Application or in an associated preference or support file.

The best remedy is to totally uninstall TurboTax and all associate files and then re-install. That will not delete or change any .tax2019 data file that had already been created with the tax data.

To uninstall the application and all associated files need to be deleted and then the application reinstalled. If there was a state then the state must also be reinstalled.    If you downloaded the software it is best to download a fresh copy in case there was corruption in the download.

Is turbo tax home and business 2020 compatible with MAC OS Big Sur 11.1?

I installed Turbox Tax Home & Business on my iMac running Bug Sur (sum times called MACOS 10.16 or 11.1) but it did not ask for the product key.  When I tried to execute it I experienced the start then two flashed boxes in about 1 second  I was finally able to screencapture them to read them.

First the message was: "Please wait while we verify everything is up to date ...

Followed by a message box titled Software Update saying:

"We recommend installing these updates.

The available updates marked critical and may affect important functionality."

followed by a button saying Install Updates.

After which the screen goes blank and the application just sits there

Trying to open TurboTax  in the Applications folder repeats the two messages above and returns to doing nothing.

Don't believe this is ever going to work under Big Sur.  Since I bought the CD I am going to try installing it on my Windows PC (running Win10)  😩 and see what happens next.

PS: it installed correctly there!

@EarLobe I suggest totally uninstalling the CD instillation and then download the installer file from TurboTax per the following FAQ  that contains the latest updates.  The original CD version did not play will with Big Sur but the updated version seem to work OK.   The problem is getting the CD version  to update.  So download as if you did not have a CD drive.

Is turbo tax home and business 2020 compatible with MAC OS Big Sur 11.1?

@macuser_22 Uniinstalling the 2020 version from the iMac was easy as it only put files in the Applications folder.  Going to the link you suggest: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/installing/help/i-bought-the-cd-but-my-computer-doesn-t-have-a-cd-... got me started but because I was able to successfully install TT2020 on the PC and registered it the account will not allow me to download anything from Intuit.  It says "This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads."

I am in "that account" and it obviously does not show it in Downloads because I have the CD and did not download it from intuit..  Small oxymoron here.

You will need to contact customer support.

That is a bug created this year by how license codes are treated when installing from the CD.  In the past you were required to create a TurboTax account when installing if you did not have one so the license could be associated with you.   For 2020 that is no longer required so, the CD install creates a dummy account for the CD to show the license has been used, so when you try to install  download the license code finds that dummy account and says it has been used.

I do not know of any way they can fix this (other than manually pushing you a download with a new license code) because it is not possible to change the software that has already been pressed onto CD's that have been sold or are on store shelves.

As long as you install from the CD - no problem, but if you first install from CD and then try to install from download you cannot.
